Instructions
The supplied spreadsheet for this activity describes the results of a ten-question quiz given at the end of an instructional unit, with each question graded either correct (one point) or incorrect (zero points). 75% is the minimum passing score.
Review the supplied data sheet before attempting to answer the questions for this assignment. As you review, identify the strengths and weaknesses of both students and individual test items. Look at overall class performance. Identify any outliers that may exist. After reviewing the data, please answer the following questions in the spaces provided.
QUESTION / YOUR ANSWER/RESPONSE1. What is the overall class average? / 6.55
2. Based on these scores, how would you describe the class’ performance on this unit? / If you look at the class average, the class is showing inadequate progress with an average of 6.55 out of 10. However, if you look at the individual test questions, questions four and eight throw off the class average. If those two questions are taken out of the test, the class average would significantly improve.
3. Who are the top performing students? / David and Margaret are the top performers scoring a 9. The following students also performed well with a score of 8: Ronette, Jacob, and Wanda.
4. Which students failed, or nearly failed, the quiz? / Since 75% is the minimum passing score then the following students failed or nearly failed the quiz: Sally (7), Tony (4), Frank (7), Mark (6), Harry (6), William (7), Trevor (2), Jerome (6), Wilma (6), Sue (7), Christina (5), Ellen (7), Silvia (7), and Trevor (6).
5. What quiz items did students master most? / The quiz item mastered the most was question 7 with 100% of students passing. Question 1 was the next question mostly mastered with 80% of students passing.
6. What quiz items did students master least? / The quiz item mastered the least is question 4 with 0% of students passing. Also, only 40% of students mastered question 8.
7. Is there any item(s) that appears to be suspicious in terms of student scores? Which? WHY? / The two items that appear to be suspicious are question four and question eight. None of the students passed question four and only 40% of students passed question eight.
8. Based on your answers above, what conclusions can you draw about individual and class performance on this quiz? / Both individual and class performance are skewed down due to these questions. If these questions were taken out both individual and class performance scores would significantly improve.
9. Based on your conclusions, what are the THREE most important recommendations you can make to adjust your instructional practice for this topic? / First, I would remove questions four and eight from the quiz to get a better idea of individual and class averages. I would re-teach the objectives for items four and eight to the whole class. I would use the scores to create small group targeting the individual skill needs of particular students. For example, I would create a group including Frank, Trevor, Sue, and Christina to remediate for objective one. Then I would give those students another test to make sure they mastered the objective.
