NOTE: Page Layout cannot be completed in a Drawing or Imaging program.

PURPOSE OF THE CONTEST

To provide competitors with the opportunity to demonstrate, through practical and theoretical application, their skills and task knowledge in the industry relevant to:

  • Creative problem solving in relation to a specific target market
  • Technical competence of industry standard software to modify and manage digital imagery and typography
  • Demonstrate traditional creativity by combining illustrations and typography

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO BE TESTED

  • Project planning and time management
  • Design basics including, colour theory, page layout and typography
  • Technical competence with printers and computers, including file management
  • Merging computer graphics into an existing die-line
  • Using industry standard software: Adobe Illustrator for logo recreation plus original graphics, Adobe Photoshop for image manipulation, colour correction and image resolution. Adobe InDesign for copy editing, including tabs, indents, rules and text wrap
  • Assembly and presentation of final printed mock-up
  • Create an original design, which will combine illustration with typography

  • Immediate disqualification may occur at the discretion of the technical chair if a competitor displays any one of the following: inappropriate behaviour uses equipment or material that is not permitted, such as the use of personal digital saving devices (jump drives) prior to your project been submitted to the judges.

JOB INTERVIEW

To assist competitors in preparing for their eventual job searches there is a “job interview” incorporated into this contest. It is expected that the competitors will arrive WITH A RÉSUMÉ and be prepared for interview questions and discussion. Performance in the interview accounts for 5% of the individual’s overall mark.

9:00 - 11:30 Competition

11:30 - 12:00 Lunch

12:00 – 2:30 Competition

Job interviews will be conducted throughout the competition.

THE TASK:

On the day of the competition you will be given the full project details.

You will be creating the following:

-Logo in Adobe Illustrator.

-4-page document in Adobe InDesign with proper print procedures.

-All photos for document must be original photos taken by you on the day of the competition.

-Submit packaged InDesign files, and high resolution PDF.

Correct resolution of images (dpi)
Correct colour mode of images
Correct size of raster images
Correct file saving format of images (type / extension)
Correct document sizes
Appropriate utilization of bleed, margins
Collecting digital files for archiving (file storing for InDesign files)
Production of press ready PDF
Production of digital colours separation
Assembly of final product (impact, message reached)
Use of appropriate application (software)
Vector line quality (logo)
Type management – tabs, indents, rules, text wrap and paragraph styles
Following verbal and written instructions

As the rules state, there are no ties. If the score is tied after the contest, the creative component will be used as the tie breaker.
