Overcoming challenges in teaching and learning: The use of a virtual health assessment for nursing students
Hawkesbury12-1pm, HW-M1-0.25
Challenges associated with introducing client interviews and health status assessment early in a nursing programme provided the impetus to develop new approaches to health status assessment. Talking to the computer? Students' reactions to blended learning in languages
Bankstown12-1pm, BA-23.30 (LT04)
The Languages 101 LTAP group will present aspects of the 2008 (Autumn) beginners unit in each of the languages highlighting the new blended (online) component. Student evaluation of the units in 2007 and 2008 will be compared. The group will also present results from a unique questionnaire investigating goals and expectations of students learning languages and their degree of satisfaction with the online and face-to-face components of their unit of study. The presentation will include a preview of how the project can be scaled-up to higher-level units. The staff involved are Bruno Di Biase (General introduction, conclusions and Italian); Rosemary Suliman (Arabic); Ruying Qi (Chinese); Xiangdong Liu (Japanese beginners); Isabel Pena (Spanish); and Satomi Kawaguchi (Scaling up: Japanese intermediates). (An LTAP Project)

Linking research with training: A virtual translation agency
Bankstown1-2pm, BA-23.30 (LT04)
One of the features that make the UWS translation training program unique is its recently created virtual translation agency. Each semester, approximately 150 students engage in projects which take advantage of the latest technologies and workflows, often for authentic purposes. The agency was created applying current research in localisation management and translation training. It now constitutes a lab environment in which to test which skills produce better translators and which translation procedures generate better results. (An LTAP Project)

The pains and the gains of curriculum re-design
Bankstown2-3pm, BA-23.30 (LT04)
The School of Social Sciences is undergoing a major curriculum re-design project affecting all of its courses. This presentation and discussion will focus on the rationale and implications of the re-design, the planning and management of the project, and the pedagogical opportunities afforded in re-newing the curriculum. Plans for teaching and learning in large enrolment core units across two campuses will be discussed, including e-learning designs that balance pedagogical effectiveness with delivery efficiency.

Engagement with Indigenous communities to arrive at design interventions to improve environmental health
Parramatta12-1pm, PS-EA.1.31
The final year Coursework Industrial Design Students have, both in 2007 and in 2008, had a four-day field trip experience whereby they engaged with Indigenous communities in order to get a first hand account of some of the environmental health issues they are living with. This engagement strategy has produced remarkable outcomes: last year three students filed patents and two students were finalists in the highly regarded Australian International Design Award, Dyson Student Award. (An LTAP project)

The Indigenous musician: Telling life stories through music
Penrith12-1pm, KW-I.1.17
Indigenous musicians, like all musicians, are sharing life stories through music when they perform. However the stories of Indigenous Australian musicians, in particular Archie Roach and Kerrianne Cox, could be confronting for white Australian listeners. This presentation discusses a project aimed at introducing UWS music students (both post-graduate and under-graduate) to Indigenous Australian musicians who were invited to perform at UWS. The presentation will also show footage of a video documentary of the musicians who came to UWS. (An LTAP Project)

Likert scales in evaluation - why it's usually wrong.
Campbelltown12-1pm, CA-05.2.04 Conf. 7&8
Likert scales are widely used in evaluation. Frequently the data are analysed as if the scores were interval or ratio when in fact they are ordinal. The use of means, t-tests etc is inappropriate. This presentation will review the dangers of incorrect analysis and explore options for effective analysis of data.
ProfessorIanWilson

Teaching ideas for lectures: How can we motivate students to engage?
Hawkesbury10-11am, HW-G6-0.43 (LT)
This will be an interactive presentation where you will be asked to imagine you are one of many students with a range of backgrounds, motivations, and academic abilities, in a large group lecture. I will demonstrate some ways to: i. encourage peer learning, using cognitive conflict and student response units (SRUs); and ii. apply a practical, research-based theory for how we learn, and how you can use this as a basis for informing your own teaching, research and scholarship. The rationale for the presentation involved two aspects - the content, and the delivery. The content is a simple but powerful model for learning that any academic can use, to inform their teaching, educational research and scholarship. The delivery is intended to model the uses of SRUs, hints on lecture recording practice, and examples of peer learning in a lecture context.
Associate ProfessorRoyTasker
UWS lectures online
Hawkesbury11am-12pm, HW-G6-0.43 (LT)
UWS Lectures Online is a lecture capture system designed to record the audio and the visual presentations within an equipped lecture theatre. This system is being installed in the main lecture theatres across all campuses. These recordings can then be placed onto a vUWS site for student access. The session will cover general information about using this technology in 2009, hints from those who have participated in the pilot sessions in 2008 and examples of good practice.
TDU, ITD and Assoc. Prof. Roy Tasker
Our learning styles and preference for groupwork: Views of domestic and overseas students
Parramatta10-11am, PS-EA.2.13 (LT02)
This study reports the findings from a study which examines the influence of cross cultural differences on learning style and and students' preference for working in groups. A case study will then be presented to show how differences in culture and other demographic variables (such as gender, age and working experience) were taken into consideration in the design of an assessment task in order to achieve effective team work.
ProfessorStephenTeo
vUWS: Where’s the Library?
Parramatta11am-12pm, PS-EA.2.13 (LT02)
In contemporary universities, the institutional learning management system is increasingly central to a student's learning experience. In the past, students would physically come to the Library - now increasingly the Library’s virtual resources and services will come to them. If UWS students are to graduate conversant with the literature of their discipline, and equipped with lifelong learning skills it is imperative that library resources are strategically integrated into vUWS sites. How can this be achieved in the current UWS environment?
Ms Liz Curach and Mrs Meg Boness
Innovative assessment development: The poster session
Parramatta12-1pm, PS-EA.2.13 (LT02)
Conventionally, assessment structure tends to be boring and repetitive from unit to unit, which often leaves students ill-prepared to achieve maximum learning outcomes. This presentation offers an innovative approach to curriculum development where students are engaged in assessment.
MsNicoleStegemann
Recognising excellence in teaching: Applying for teaching awards
Parramatta1-3pm, PS-EA.2.13 (LT02)
This interactive session will introduce participants to the types of teaching awards available at UWS and nationally through the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (formerly Carrick Institute). Participants will also be involved in discussion and activities designed to assist them recognise and document teaching excellence.
Associate ProfessorCatherineSinclair
Teaching awards: Teaching excellence or just navel gazing?
Penrith12-1pm, KW-I.1.05
Applying for teaching awards often elicits negative, rather than positive, comments. Such as, 'That's just not me', 'I'm not into self promotion' and 'I don't have time'. This presentation will focus on the journey of one award winner and examine the 'agony and ecstasy' of going through the application process. What does it involve? How difficult can it be? What happens if you don't win? What happens if you do? Will the process improve your teaching? If you have always wanted to apply for a teaching award but never had the courage to try, then this is the presentation for you!

What Indigenous students like and don't like about university
Hawkesbury12-1pm, HW-M1-0.25
In our research we have interviewed indigenous students to establish what has been their experience of studying in the Social Ecology post graduate programs. We have utilised complexity theory for design of inquiry and selection of methodology. Via coherent conversations with students and staff we have collected a range of views which we are analysing using attractor and fractal narrative analysis. We will reason general conclusions from specific instances regarding educational principles and practice. (An LTAP Project)
