Description of Survey Assignments

Discussion of assignment:

During this course, each student will develop a survey for parents and a survey for adolescents specific to issues of human sexuality education. The purpose of these two assignments is to:

  1. Identify key issues/concerns of parents and adolescents discussed in the assigned readings
  2. Formulate open ended questions specific to these key issues/concerns
  3. Interpret parent and adolescent responses making reference to assigned readings

Instruction:

Each survey is to contain four open ended questions in the style of the five types of inquiry questions using a combination of these types. The survey is to be administered to five parents and five adolescents. The completed assignment includes:

  1. a copy of the survey. After each question, cite the article that influenced its development.
  2. all raw data (all completed surveys)
  3. survey analysis to include: age, gender, and race/ethnicity of those interviewed; how you selected those you interviewed and your relationship to them; how the survey was conducted (phone, personal interview, or respondents completed survey on their own); and specific areas of the questions and a summary of the responses for each question.
  4. survey interpretation to include reference to and use of information from at least three articles to support or negate your summarized responses for each question. A paragraph for each of the four questions will be sufficient. For example: For interpretation, an adolescent question about age of initiation of sexual behavior in your survey could reference the Youth Risk Behavior Survey results stating when teens in the US typically begin sexual activity. You could compare your most frequent survey response with the US response.
  5. Selection of two of the four questions to ask the guest speaker. On the list of survey questions, circle the two you plan to ask.
