Describe the physical features of the River Ouse and its valley between 430149 and 407118.

(8)

The River Ouse between 430149 and 407118 has many identifiable characteristics. From the O.S map it is evident that this is the lower course of the river as the surrounding land is very flat, only approximately 10m high. Therefore I would suggest that the surrounding land is the River Ouse’s flat flood plain.

The river is also very meandering, which is a common feature of the lower course, there are many meanders for example at 422134, 420128, 418117. There are also many identifiable ox bow lakes in this transect for example at 430139, 422135, 424135 and 421129.

Between 430149 and 407118 there are many smaller tributary rivers that join the River Ouse, for example at 426136, 422132, 423136 and 421133. Between 425126 and 407118, the river has formed a new channel, which will eventually cut off the old meander. This probably happened during a time of flood.

Therefore, the River Ouse has many identifiable physical features between 430149 and 407118, the characteristics of the river channel itself as well as the surrounding land would lead me to conclude that this is the lower course of the river.
