OBITUARY:

Catherine Stone Murphy Obituary

Catherine Stone Murphy, daughter of John and Catherine Stone, was born

in Morgan county, Indiana, near what is now known as Alaska on June 1,

1843, and on January 6, 1935, about noon, while the clouds were broken

and the sun was peeping through and the day developing into a beautiful

evening and the earth illuminated and lighter with its radiant rays of

light, death stole in and claimed for its victim our beloved mother, she

beng 91 years, 7 months and 5 days of age.

Jesus said: "Watch, for ye know not the hour when the Lord cometh". Her

life seems to us a short journey, and when human hands had ministered

all in their power, the inevitable came, as it must come to all of us,

and Aunt Kate, as she was called, answered the call.

When quite young she gave her heart to God and united with the Church of

Christ at the old log church situated one-half mile north of Alaska,

Indiana, having the emblem of baptism administered by emersion, after

transferring her membership to the Higgins Creek church, and remaining a

faithful member until her death.

In the year 1860, at the age of 17 years, her marriage to John Murphy

was solemnized by Squire Thomas Potorff, and to this union was born

seven children, three of whom have preceded her in death, namely:

Alexander, commonly known as "Doc", Samuel and Delia.

Lafayette Murphy of Coldwater, Mich., John Murphy of Gosport, Mrs. John

Allee of Quincy, Mrs. Annie Freeman are among those surviving.

The father of this union died in the year 1904, after which Mrs. Murphy

earned her own living until overtaken with loss of eyesight, when she

was compelled to give up and make her home with her children.

Aunt Kate, as she was better known, was a well respected citizen in all

communities in which she lived. She was a kind, true, loving, devoted

wife and mother, always trying to make those with whom she came in

contact happy. To know her was to love her.

A few hours before the Great Reaper thrust his sickle into the sheaf for

the great storehouse, she was heard to say in the presence of a

granchild: " I see your face."

Her voice is stilled, a vacant place appears and she leaves four

children, three grandchildren, twenty seven great-grandchildren, one

nephew and a host of other relatives and friends. Let us console

ourselves that our loss is her eternal gain.

Mother dear has left us, her face we'll see no more. We know that she is

no wresting on that great eternal shore. We always loved and trusted

her, her guidance always right. We're striving now to meet her in that

land so fair and bright. Farewell, farewell, dear Mother, we miss you

oh so much. Those loving words, that tender smile and the hands we loved

to touch. But now you've gone to Heaven, with God and the Angels fair.

And we know if we but trust Him some day we'll meet you there. --Mr. &

Mrs. John Murphy

Notes for MAUDE MAY JONES:

One of Maude and John's grandsons had a motorcycle accident. He had just passed the car which Aunt Maude was riding in on State Road 67 north of Paragon. A short distance up the road a car with New York License plates pulled out to pass a car and hit the motorcycle head on. The Casell boy was killed instantly and the car carrying Aunt Maude was the first one to reach the scene of the accident. I think Maude and John also raised Alec and Bessie's boy, Harold after Bessie's death.
