MANAGEMENT OF VATAJAKASA.

6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE STUDY.

6.1 NEED FOR THE STUDY

Children are more prone to diseases of respiratory system for a variety of reasons including immune system immaturity, environmental factors, exposure to infections etc. Cough is seen as a symptom in many systemic diseases.1

In Ayurvedic classics VatajaKasa is elaborately explained with Nidana, Samprapti, Bheda, Lakshanas and Chikitsa. The Lakshanas are Shushka Gala, Shuka Purna Gala, Shushka Kasa with Shushka Alpa Kapha, Svara Bheda, Parshva Shula. Shanka Shula, Dourbalya etc.2

The Chikitsa Sutra of Vataja Kasa explains “Kasamadau Snehairupacharet” meaning to start the treatment with Snehana. Kantakari Ghrita contains Kantakari, Amrita and Ghrita, which are benefial in Vataja Kasa.2

Kasa can be treated by both Shodhana and Shamana Chikitsa. Shodhana is difficult to

perform in children and henceShamana is the choice of treatment in the management of Kasa in children.2a

In 2006 a clinical study on Kasa was conducted with Shati compound (Shati and Badara) and concluded that it is beneficial in managing Vataja Kasa.

Children are more disturbed by Vataja Kasa. Hence the study is planned to evaluate the effect of Kantakari Ghrita in management of Vataja Kasa.

6.2 REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

Kasa is explained in the classics as a symptom and even as a disease. The Nirukti of Kasa is described as “Kasanath Kasa”ie. which produces difficulty. Kasa is elaborately described with Purva Rupa, Bheda, Rupa, Samprapti Sadhyaasadhyata and Chikitsa. VataPrakopa Nidana like Ruksha, Shita, Kashaya, Alpa Bhojana, Vega Dharana, Ayasa etc leads to Vata Dushti, which causes Stroto Dushti. This Vitiated Dosha reaches the Ura Pradesh cause Sangha2manifests as Hrith Parshva Shula, Svara Bheda, Sushka Kasa withAlpa Shushka Kapha, Dourbalya2a, 3 Shankha, Udara Shula4 etc.

Kantakari and Guduchi the ingredients of Kantakari Ghrita are considered beneficial in managing Kasa 5.Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum) is Kasahara and Kanthya and Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) is Tridoshagna, Rasayana and Medhya.6Ghrita is Agni Dipaka, Vata Pitta Shamaka & Satmya to children 7

A clinical study on Kasa with indigenous drug compound by Dr. Chethan kumar V.K 2006 gives conclusion that Shati compound is effective in relieving dry cough by 93.16 %Sleep disturbance by 91.66%, wheeze by 87.96%, sputum quantity & quality 100%

In 1980 a study on the concept of Vatika Kasa & it treatment with Kantakari Ghrita was done by Dr.Rambabu Dwivedi from dept of Kaya Chikitsa (Jamnagar)
