Promotion and Evaluation Criteria for LTS Director

4/14/2015: Reviewed and approved by faculty

3/18/2014: Office Manager located and sent to Department Head

Promotion requirements for Career Track (C2) Instructor to Senior Instructor I (C3): After 18 academic terms of .5 FTE or greater, C2 Instructors must be reviewed for promotion to Senior Instructor I. If promoted, the successful Senior I Instructor will receive a C3 contract, which is issued for up to two years at a time, carries timely notice, and carries eligibility for sabbatical leave.

Linguistics' Criteria for Promotion of Career Track Instructor (C2) to Senior Instructor I (C3): Linguistics places a high value on quality performance from its faculty. It demonstrates this commitment in recognizing quality contributions in teaching, professional development, administration and service.

For promotion to Senior I, excellence in teaching, professional development, and service is required. The position of Director of the Language Teaching Specialization MA program is a unique position with a different array of duties and responsibilities than other NTTF positions. The LTS Director has primary responsibility for all LTS MA Program academic operations, including scheduling and staffing LTS courses and overseeing the work of faculty teaching in LTS, as well as LTS graduate student admissions and advising. Thus although the position entails significant teaching responsibilities, essential duties of the LTS Director fall under the heading of service.

Thus the three areas of performance by which faculty are judged will be weighted approximately at 50-70% service, 15-25% teaching, and 15-25% professional development. Service in this context is primarily administration of the LTS MA program; as always, service to the Linguistics Department, the University of Oregon, and to national and/or international professional organizations is also considered. Evaluation of teaching is based on quality of classroom teaching, teaching-related duties, and materials development. Examples of professional development activity include: writing a resource book or having articles or reviews accepted in edited books, professional journals, professional online teaching-related sites, editing journals and books, writing language textbooks, presentations at conferences, and grant activity.

Data Sources for Review: C2 Instructors who are coming up for promotion review to C3 Senior Instructor I will submit a vita and personal statement (addressing teaching, professional activities, service, and administration, as relevant). The Office Manager will assemble the promotion file, including the following items (always signed and dated by the individuals composing them):

Primary file: (1) The Instructor's vita. (2) The Instructor's personal statement. (3) The Instructors signed statement of waiver/no waiver. (4) A minimum of five summative peer classroom teaching observations (ideally one per year). (5) A list of all courses taught, including term and enrollment, together with a summary of quantitative student classroom evaluations for required UO questions. (6) The promotion review committee's evaluative (narrative) report. (Note: This report may be confidential, pending the instructor's signed letter of waiver.) (7) The Department Head makes an independent evaluation which is included in the file.
