Department of Internal Medicine ARTS – Teaching Benchmarks

The VCU Department of Internal Medicine has developed a structure for “crediting” time for teaching and service in the DOIM Allocation of ARTS funding policy (refer to policy). In order to receive the full 5% of salary for teaching, Department faculty members must meet the benchmarks outlined for teaching:

  • All faculty members MUST complete 80% of learner evaluations within 10 days of receipt of the evaluation (medical students and graduate medical education (GME) learners). Notably, this is consistent with the ACGME requirements for GME learners.
  • All faculty members MUST participate in 120 hours of education-oriented activity annually.
  • 72 hours of this time must be dedicated to core residency program and/or medical student activities (see table of activities)
  • 48 hours of this time must be dedicated to fellowship program activities, as determined by the subspecialty division. The subspecialty division may also set minimal expectations for all divisional faculty members (see benchmarks outlined below)

Division of Hematology-Oncology Faculty Specific Faculty ARTS Benchmarks

In order to meet the minimal expectations for teaching within the Department of Internal Medicine, all full-time faculty in the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Palliative Care whose primary affiliation is with hematology and /or oncology must meet the criteria outlined above by the DOIM in additionto meeting the following subspecialty required criteria:

  • Attend at least one-third (i.e. at least 8 annually) of the following Tuesday 5PM division conferences: oncology journal club, fellow-delivered didactic talk, fellows QI presentation, and/or fellows research presentation
  • Facilitate at least one sessions in either the Oncology (Tuesday 4PM) or Hematology (Wednesday 7AM) core didactic sessions for the fellowship training program
  • Attend at least three of the following events annually: Hematology-Oncology fellows graduation party, 5th Tuesday division socials, DOIM Fall Chili Party, DOIM Celebration of Excellence, or DOIM Winter Party
  • Contribute to the academic mission of the fellowship training program by actively serving in at least one of the following capacities (i.e. lead-faculty mentor of a fellow scholarly project*, faculty mentor of a quality team project*, training program committee, curriculum reviewer, or the equivalent as determined by the program director)

*Including completion of the associated evaluations and progress reports

  • Participate in at least threetrainee recruitment activities annually. Note:This expectation may be fulfilled by conducting 1) formal faculty interviews for the VCU Internal Medicine Residency Program (including combined Internal Medicine-Pediatric and Emergency Medicine-Internal Medicine training programs) or the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program and/or 2) attendance at a general recruitment sessions for the Core Residency (i.e. Internal Medicine Recruitment Reception)
  • Attend the Heme-Onc training program faculty retreats and/orat least one faculty development session hosted with the DOIM or SOM annually
