Overview

Career development posts have been introduced for candidates who wish to continue with additional training in secondary care hospitals following completion of their Foundation Training. The posts are suitable for those dentists who, after completing Foundation Training, would like further experience prior to either applying for specialist training or considering further training as a dentist with special interest.

Successful applicants will initially be appointed for 10 months with an option to renew up to amaximum of a further 12 months. Renewal of the post would be subject to a satisfactory formal assessment on completion of the first 12 months.

The posts will be split into 4/6 month blocks alternating between the Dental Hospital and one of theOMFS units in the region.

Dental Hospital

There will be rotations between the specialties of Restorative Dentistry, Oral Medicine/Oral Surgery and additional dental specialties and Paediatric/Orthodontics.

Central Manchester/Salford//Trafford

The post is based at Manchester Royal Infirmary and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Peripheral clinics are held at Salford Royal, Wigan Infirmary and Trafford General as well as day case operating. A full range of surgery is practiced including head and neck oncology, trauma and orthognathic surgery, cleft lip and palate and temporomandibular joint surgery. An extensive amount of dento alveolar surgery and implantology is also carried out. Manchester Royal and Salford Royal are designated major Trauma Centres for Greater Manchester and Salford is the Regional Centre for Neurosurgery.

The training in this post will be tailored to the career ambitions of the appointed individual.

Royal Preston Hospital

Maxillofacial surgery is provided across three sites with the RoyalPrestonHospital the main site for all inpatient and trauma services .The other two sites are BlackpoolVictoriaHospital and ChorleyDistrictGeneralHospital.

Services provided are head & neck surgical oncology, facial deformity & orthognathic surgery, implantology, salivary surgery, TMJ pathology, dento alveolar surgery and exposure to a wide range of oral medicine conditions.

Royal Preston is the regional trauma centre so we deal with a number of facial and cranio facial trauma cases.

The trainee will work in a well supported environment with their own minor oral surgery lists/clinics with access to GA cases as well .There are out patient clinics to which the trainee will be required to attend .We can tailor the requirements of the trainee to help develop their area of interest .Encouragement is given in to research and active participation in clinical audit.

There will be an on call commitment as well giving a wide exposure to all forms of facial trauma and emergencies.

Satisfactory completion of clinical skills will be assessed at interview.
