Pre-major Advising
It is important to realize that it’s okay to be undecided about your major. About 30% of all entering students are unsure about their major, and about 75% of all students declare a major and then change their minds at least once during their college careers. You will be assigned a Pre-major advisor located at 200 Student Services Building, Allendale Campus, (616) 331-3588. Pre-major advisors provide academic advising and career exploration initiatives. Advisors can help you plan a class schedule that will introduce you to various majors. Sometimes, just sharing an idea with someone who understands your confusion may lead to clarification of goals or a better understanding of what is needed to be successful in a particular major.
Your Pre-major advisor will serve as an excellent resource agent and will connect you to other campus resources available to help you choose a major and a career. Your Pre-major advisor will also help you identify career interests for selecting a major. Once you have decided on a major, your advisor will help you declare the major and connect you to the appropriate advising center or faculty advisor.
Majors Fair – Wednesday, November 4, 2015
By attending the Majors Fair you will have an opportunity to ask faculty and staff questions about majors and minors offered at Grand Valley. These representatives are eager to discuss coursework, career options, student
organizations, and potential graduate school opportunities. Also, alumni are at the Majors Fair to share information about the world of work. The Fair has an informal atmosphere where students may drop in and ask questions, pick up handouts, and look at displays.
University Studies
US 102 - Career Education Class is a one-credit course designed for students seeking assistance in developing a career and educational plan suited to their needs, goals, and career choices. Emphasis and activities will be placed on personal and career assessment, career and occupational information, planning, and decision making.
What Can You Do Right Now?
Focus 2 is an online, personalized career and educational planning system based on established career and counseling principles. It provides a complete picture of your interests, values, personality, skills, and leisure activities using self-assessment questionnaires, interest inventories, and personality testing. Go to: http://www.gvsu.edu/careers/focus-2-70.htm and click on Create an Account. Your access code is gvsu and you must use your GVSU e-mail address to create the account. Focus 2 will save your test results and selected majors/career and portfolio. You can review this information at any time and discuss the results with your Pre-major advisor.
