Two minors or a minor and a breadth area are required.‘M’ courses do not count in the 48 credit minimum.
Notes & Definitions:
Minor: includes at least 3 courses/9 credit hrs from one division.
Breadth: a “focus” area that includes at least 3 interdisciplinary courses/9 credit hrs (from across divisions) that represent a specific topical or methods-related area.At least 1 course/3 credits must be outside the major and minor discipline. Examples of potential “breadth” areas include (but are not limited to) biological sciences, cancer, genetics, global health, health disparities, health economics, health law, health policy, innovation, infectious disease, injury and violence, leadership, maternal and child health, mental health, nutrition, physical activity, toxicology.
Concentration:a problem-based area that spans disciplinary fields and therefore draws upon faculty expertise from two or more divisions. Concentrations are supported by a specific curriculum and consist of 9-14 credit hours of coursework. For a list of approved concentrations, please see the UTSPH website ( A concentration can count as a breadth.
After the preliminary exam, students should select a faculty member from both their minor and breadth areas who can advise students on appropriate courses to fulfill the requirements of the minor or breadth.
Either minor or breadth should be quantitative methods. The intermediate statistics course (PH1700) is a prerequisite for the PhD that do not count toward the doctoral credit hours.
