"Deck the Physics Lab" #1

(Tune: "Deck the Halls")

Deck the physics lab with lenses
Fa la la la la la la la la
Light bends more when they are densest
Fa la la la la la la la la
We can now observe reflection
Fa la la la la la la la la
Not to mention its direction
Fa la la la la la la la la

Stroboscopes are swiftly turning
Fa la la la la la la la la
While our eager minds are learning
Fa la la la la la la la la
Light diffraction we can now see
Fa la la la la la la la la
See how fun our physics can be
Fa la la la la la la la la

"We Three Quarks"

(Tune: "We Three Kings")

We three quarks fine particles are
Bearing charm we travel afar
Fields and forces, spin of course is
Multiplied by h-bar
Oh, quarks are wondrous, quarks are light
Quarks have colours, clear and bright
Still misleading, still exceeding
All the physicists' insight.

We three quarks trade gluons all day
All baryons are made in this way.
Confined inside, we always hide
Unseen forever stay.
Oh, quarks are wondrous, quarks are light
Quarks stay smugly out of sight
Still misleading, still exceeding
All the physicists' insight.

"Photocells"

(Tune: "Jingle Bells")

Dashing through space-time
At the speed of light
Through vector fields we go
With our colours bright.
Keeping constant speed
In every frame is right.
Oh what fun it is to be a photon in the night
Decibels, photocells,
Now I'm going to lase.
Oh what fun it is to be a boson in the rays.
Hey!
Grad of dels, coloured gels,
Diffraction grating blaze.
Oh what fun it is to be a boson in the rays.

Cut across the lab
By a mirror steered
Through the slits we go
Nothing do we fear.
Back again we come
To the screen we've veered
Oh what fun it is to be a photon interfered.
Decibels, photocells,
Now I'm going to lase.
Oh what fun it is to be a boson in the rays.
Hey!
Grad of dels, coloured gels,
Diffraction grating blaze.
Oh what fun it is to be a boson in the rays.

"God Rest Ye Merry Physics Profs"

(Tune: "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen")

God rest ye merry Physics profs
Let nothing you dismay.
Don't moan or cry if you must all
Grade finals Christmas Day
To save you from the registrar
If grades aren't on the way.
Oh, oh, tidings of A's, B's, and C's
Mostly C's
Oh, oh, tidings of A's, B's, and C's.

"O Gravity, O Gravity"

(Tune: "O Christmas Tree")

O Gravity, O Gravity,
All Newton's theories crowning.
Where e'er we be, land, air or sea,
We're subject to your "downing."

F equals G, m-one, m-two
All over R squared, yes, it's true.
O Gravity, O Gravity,
We cannot flee, you guarantee.

"Gravity" #1

(Tune: "Jingle Bells")

When something hits the earth,
You'll notice in a trice,
It makes a great big bang,
Now isn't that so nice?
So what makes things fall down?
What makes them go ker-plop?
The answer's in this song, my friend,
We'll sing it 'till we drop.

Oh!
Gravity, Gravity,
Keeps us on the ground.
It was explained by Newton,
(The scientist renowned)!
Gravity, Gravity,
Mass times nine-point-eight.
Is a vector pointing down,
That's sometimes known as "weight."

Walk around the earth.
Keep a steady pace.
If gravity weren't there,
You'd float away in space.
Now some call it a push--
Well, call it any name,
But gravity will always PULL--
Attraction is its game!

Oh!
Gravity, Gravity,
Keeps us on the ground.
It was explained by Newton,
(The scientist renowned)!
Gravity, Gravity,
Mass times nine-point-eight.
Is a vector pointing down,
That's sometimes known as "weight."

"Light Travels in Straight Lines"

(Tune: "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen")

Light travels in straight lines,

that is unless somehow it's turned.
It can reflect (or bounce right back),

but that's quite eas'ly learned.
Refraction is the property with which we're now concerned:

Oh - Sin theta-one times index one is equal to
Sin theta-two times index two!

Refraction is the bending which

is caused by changing speed.
When entering at an angle, light

will bend, and then proceed--
to travel in a new straight line, wherever that may lead.

Oh - Sin theta-one times index one is equal to
Sin theta-two times index two!
Now since the bending's caused by

changing speed, we have a clue
To calculate light's speed in

any medium, (it's true!)
n-one v-one is equal to n-two times v-two.

Oh - Sin theta-one times index one is equal to
Sin theta-two times index two!

When slowing down the light bends

't’ward the normal' as they say.
When speeding-up it will bend

from the normal away --
Until the angle critical is reached to our dismay!

Oh - Sin theta-one times index one is equal to
Sin theta-two times index two!

"Photons of Light"

(Tune: "Silent Night")

Photons of light, sparkling bright,
Energy in the night.
Energy like a stash in the bank.
Frequency times the constant of Planck.
Energy we can use...
use it as we choose!

"Deck the Physics Labs" #2

(Tune: "Deck the Halls")

Deck the Physics lab with vectors
Fa la la la la la la la la la
And with laser light reflectors
Fa la la la la la la la la la
Let us have a celebration
Fa la la la la la la la la
Full of song and jubilation
Fa la la la la la la la la

Deck the lab and be of good cheer.
Fa la la la la la la la la la
No more Physics classes this year!
Fa la la la la la la la la)
But one question can be foreseen...
Fa la la la la la la la la
Who the heck knows what these words mean:
"Fa la la la la la la la la"?

"Oh Little Physics Reference Sheet"

(Melody: "O Little Town of Bethlehem")

O Little Physics Reference Sheet,
so much information's here.
With our Mechanics, Waves, and Heat,
You've helped us a lot this year.
The speeds of light and sound
and refractive indicies,
They all are here,
We shall not fear,
While holding facts like these.

And lots of useful formulae,
are tabulated here.
They help refresh our memories,
when recall is less-than-clear.
For Distance-Time relations,
and laws of E and M,
will sometimes blur,
so we refer
To you to look for them.

Specific Heats, and Boiling points,
and trigonometric sines,
Though highly prized, aren't memorized.
They're looked-up within your lines.
Examinations final are not too far away.
We know that you will help us through
The physics Judgment-day.

"Frosty the Photon"

(Tune: "Frosty the Snowman")

Frosty the Photon was quite a quantum sight
with a zero mass and an endless life, and
a speed approaching light.

There must have been some magic in a
physics lab one year,
For when they studied x-ray beams, old
Frosty did appear.

Frosty the Photon say he knows he's
not that large,
But he said one day if he comes this way,
he will give us all a charge.

Thumpity, thump, thump, thumpity, thump, thump
Moving fast as light.
Thumpity, thump, thump, thumpity, thump, thump
Frosty's out of sight!

"Here in Static Equilibrium"

(Tune: "Winter Wonderland")

All my moments have cancelled,
Sum of forces is equal.
I'm fully inert and doing no work,
Here in static equilibrium.

Every push meets another,
Every pull has a counter.
The state I allude is true lassitude,
Here in static equilibrium.

All my forces balance out exactly,
You can even put me to a test.

Push me out in any old direction,
And you'll find I'll no longer be at rest.

Can't you see that I'm happy?
Sitting here cal and mellow,
Don't want to go home, so leave me alone.
Here in static equilibrium.

"Gravity" #2

(Tune: "Jingle Bells")

A comet hits the earth,
It's made of methane ice.
It makes a giant force,
Now isn't that so nice?
So what made it come here?
What made it hit the earth?
The answer's very clear, my friend,
It fills you up with mirth.

Gravity, gravity,
Keeps you on the ground.
An apple fell on Newton. He said,
"What goes up comes down,"
Gravity, gravity,
Mass times nine point eight.
Remember, travel very fast, if earth
You must escape.

Walk around the earth,
Keep a steady pace
If gravity weren't here,
You'd float away in space.
Call it what you want,
Call it any name.
But this force is a heavyweight
Attraction is its name!

OHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! (Back to chorus)

Physics Night

(Tune: “Silent Night”)

Physics night

Having a fright

Newton's Laws

Take a pause

Reading reading study hard

What's the force exerted on my notecard?

Sleep I need to sleep

Sleep I need to sleep

Physics night

Having a fright

9.8

meters per second squared

The bullet hits the monkey

How do I find the acceleration of this key?

F equals m a

F equals m a

Physics night

Having a fright

What'd you get

For problem 2

Use mu to find the force of friction

Of a car rounding a track

Velocity is a vector

Velocity is a vector

Twas The Night Before a Physics Test

Twas the night before a physics test

and all through the house

not a creature was stirring

'cept me and a mouse

papers were flung about my room without care

in hopes I could find a way to pass somewhere.

My brother was tucked all snug in his bed

I thought I'd go up and shave his head

with my book on my desk and me in my jammies

I settled down for a long night of the crammies

When suddenly I just about imploded

I sprang from my chair my brain overloaded

out through the window I flew with a crash

and due to gravity I landed in the trash

The moon couldn't be seen through the falling rain

and the wind blew about like a hurricane

when what to my exhausted eyes should I see

a chariot drawn by horses coming straight for me

With one little old driver donned in toga and thongs

I knew at once this night would be way too long

More rapid than eagles his coursers they cam

He shouted and called what I think were their names

"Now Gravity, now Speed, now Vector, and Forces

On Momentum, and Pendula,Move it Horses!

Watch out for that porch look out for that wall

Now Gravity stop that before we all fall!"

And then in a thumping I heard each hoof

as they landed full force upon my poor roof

I ran inside and looked around

As down the chimney Galileo came with a bound

He was dressed in white from his head to his foot

And he tried to shake off all the ashes and soot

A bundle of scrolls he had on his back

and I felt as though I would have a heart attack

His eyes how they shone his smile so merry

Geez, is it me or is this getting scary?

His mouth opened up and he let out a laugh

and then he began to spew out math

He talked of gravity that pulls us down

and centripetal force when things go around

he told me many a formula and laughed every time

that I said "What, huh?"

He was smart and wise like an ancient old elf

then he began to throw things off of my shelf

and as an apple fell on my poor aching head

he told me physics was nothing to dread

He spoke of a pendulum and how it works

and taught me of springs and turned with a jerk

finally now that all had been rambled

up the chimney he clumsily scrambled

He sprang to his chariot and let out a shout

Inertia then bolted and Galileo fell out

as I saw him climb in I heard him say

"By the way child, tomorrow's Saturday!"

We Three Laws

(Tune: “We Three Kings”)

We three laws of Newton are

Bearing theories we affect afar

Fields, inertian, mass, and motion

Following gravity are

Chorus:

Black Hole-oh

Theories of wonder

theories of might

Theories invented by someone so bright

Forward leading

Still achieving

Guide us through thy perfect insight

The first law of Newton am I

At constant speed or rest I lie

On a straight line unless compelled

To change thy state by force

(Chorus)

The second law of Newton is me

A force acts upon a mass you see

Speed direction is proportional

While inversely to the mass

(Chorus)

The third law of Newton I be

For every action is not alone

Equal reaction does exist

Opposite the first

(Chorus)
