Intern Application 2016
Dear Roaring Fork Valley High School Students:
Do you enjoy learning about the magic of science? Are you considering majoring in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)-related field? Have you thought about becoming a teacher and wonder what it would be like to teach chemistry, astronomy or physics in K-12? If so, the ASC wants you! We have six internships available for motivated, young scientists!
The Aspen Science Center (ASC) hosts a plethora of programs and events that bring science into the Roaring Fork Valley communities. Most of these are located in Aspen, and all include interactions and instructions for people of all ages. Our mission is to advance the public understanding of science through lifelong discovery, exploration, and education. Interns for the ASC will help to teach science to participants, and will also be required to set up and break down events.
Summer Programs include: Seniors and Technology (helping seniors with tech issues on their phones, ipads and computers), Aspen City Day Camp, Physics for Kids BBQs (6 in Aspen, 1 in Carbondale), Stargazer and Ice Cream Social, Aspen and Basalt library presentations, and the August Science Street Fair. You will also be asked to work our two Science Sundays this spring. Specific dates for all of these events are TBD.
Interns are trained, scheduled to participate at events in advance, and are paid on a per event basis. The internship pays $1000 for attendance at all events over the course of two days in spring and our eight-week summer program, with an extra stipend for the two Science Sundays and the August Street Fair.
This is an opportunity to work with STEM professionals, gain experience teaching STEM to people of all ages, and add to one’s resume for college admissions and the workforce. Interns will also receive a written recommendation for college and employment if needed.
