Dear Reagan Students and Parents,

Reagan Middle School is pleased to announce our Summer Reading Assignment for the 2016 - 2017 academic year. As a campus, we like to keep our students challenged over the summer months, therefore our campus has elected to require Summer Reading from all ELA students Grades 6-8. We would like to encourage you to read the selections along with your children and have some family discussions about great literature!

Additionally, we would like to encourage you to purchase the required books for your child if at all possible. There are some wonderful sources to find inexpensive copies of the novels such as half.com, alibris.com, amazon.com, and Half-Price Books. The advantage to owning a text is that the student can annotate in the book rather than on sticky notes which will prove important upon return to class.

All Reagan students will be required to read two books over the course of the summer: the required grade-level selection and a book of choice from the list provided. The following is the REQUIRED Summer Reading List for Reagan Middle School for 2016 - 2017:

  • 6th – Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

The incoming On-level 6th grade students will be responsible for reading the required book, Hatchet, and creating the assignment of a One Pager based on the instructions provided. There will be examples available on the Reagan Middle School website. Your assignment is due September 6th, 2016.

  • 7th – The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

The incoming On-level 7th grade students will be responsible for reading and annotating the required book, The Outsiders, and creating the assignment of a Body Biography of the character of their choice. The instructions and template for the body biography is attached. There will be examples available on the Reagan Middle School website.Your assignments are due the first day of school.

  • 8th– Things Not Seen by Andrew Clements

The incoming On-level 8th grade students will be responsible for reading and annotating the required book, Things Not Seenor Speak, and creating the assignment of a Body Biography of the main character. The instructions and template for the body biography is attached. There will be examples available on the Reagan Middle School website. Your assignments are due the first day of school.

  • ALL STUDENTS WILL READ A BOOK OF CHOICE selected from the Middle School Summer Reading List.

The Language Arts teachers can provide more specifics on expectations for the completions of the designated assignment and examples for these assignments can be found on our campus website. Students will bring their annotations and their assignment to class upon return in the fall. ALL ANNOTATIONS and ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE ON THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL for grades 7 and 8 (6th grade is due September 6th)and students will be required to participate in activities based on their required summer reading. Students are not required to annotate or complete an assignment over their book of choice, however, ELA teachers will give an assignment the first week of school covering students’ book of choice.

Your child received and signed for receipt of the 2016 – 2017 Reagan Middle School Summer Reading Assignment, and it is imperative that your child completes their summer reading prior to the first day of school. Expectations are high, and students will be held accountable for their reading. Reagan Middle School wishes your child a summer of great reading! If you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s ELA teacher and/or our campus Dean of Instruction. Happy Reading!
