Dear Players & Members,

Happy New Year to you all.

A review of last season shows that we had a 1stXI capable of winning the League with a good all round side complimented by a more than capable Professional. We opened up the season with a good spell of results that gave optimism even making progress in the Lancs Cup until the weather and rules scuppered that one. We had beaten my old club Prestwich with Ben Barrow carrying his bat, then Glossop on the toss of a coin before going down to Heyside. We should have beaten Leyland in the League Cup after having them on the rack but let them off the hook as a young Danny Lamb played a match winning innings against the odds.

Eventually the top five in the League broke away from the pack but a combination of bad performances at crucial times and the weather meant we finished 5th. Individually we did well with 4 batters scoring over 500 runs and an outstanding all round performance from Chris Williams 53 wickets and 418 runs should have seen us finish higher. The 20/20 Cup was a disappointment with Barrow proving elusive to play any match after both original games were washed out.

The 2nds finished halfway in 7th but only 4 points of 4th and were topsy turvy all season. It was again a good season for certain individuals with Steve Wilson relinquishing his role as 3rdXI captain to bat at 3 in the 2nds and he had a wonderful season scoring 421 runs inc an innings of 126 v Kendal. Liam Dugdale stepped up to take 23 wickets inc 6-40 in the same match against Kendal. Nathan Dixon averaged 46.5 from 9 innings and Steven Beck took 28 wickets at 15.

The 3rds clearly missed Steve’s batting and with no readymade replacement were always short of runs. The inevitable happened and they were relegated at the last game when there were some unexpected results! Pete Atkinson will be back hopefully helping the team to regain Division 3 status. They will be bolstered by Mike Curran from Milnthorpe and Ian Curwen from Cartmel hopefully adding wickets and runs.

The 4ths had a memorable season for many reasons finishing 3rd with a very changeable team which probably used near to 30 players.

The coming season starts on 20th April with an away game at St Annes, the only club seemingly with money to spend on players! We have been drawn at Ormskirk in the Lancs Cup and at Lytham in the National. In the League Cup, thankfully we have a home tie with Darwen and the possibility of home draws all the way..

The 1stXI have lost John Mason teaching down South, Ben Haddrick in New Zealand, Chris Williams now Pro at Unsworth in the Central Lancs and possibly Marc Hadwin. However, we have Greg Hall a batter from Penrith and Mark Ousby from Appleby joining together with a returning Scott Clement.

Trying to secure a Professional is also proving difficult both financially and finding the right quality of player. We believe we have now got that right player in Colin Ackerman, a young South African who bats 3 or 4 and bowls off spin. Lets hope for a decent summer with some sunshine this time!

What the Club badly needs now is for some of the younger members including players and parents to start getting involved and new younger volunteers to take an active interest in the running of the club.
