Dear Parent and/or Guardian of 8th Grade Student:
The adolescent years are marked as emotionally-difficult for youth, their parents, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as a normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression-which is treatable-is a leading risk factor for suicide. In addition, self-injury has become a growing problem among youth.
To proactively address these issues, Seymour Middle School will be educating youth in guidance class the week of April 3rd. The prevention curriculum utilized is titled SOS: Signs of Suicide. This program has proven to be successful at increasing help seeking behavior by students concerned about themselves or a friend. Included with this letter is an informational newsletter for parents with adolescent students. In addition, a guest speaker will be coming to speak with the 8th grade class on mental health awareness on March 9th. The speaker is from a local non-profit group called NAMI.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns in regards to the topic.
