Lastly please be aware of this scam recently attempted in Redhill.
A RETIRED civil servant rumbled conmen who claimed to be from Trading Standards

The fraudsters called at their would-be victim's Redhill home twice in two days, and made repeated telephone calls.

They told Mary Hickman they were investigating the firm which laid a new drive for her earlier this year, and that she had been charged way over the odds for the work.

Miss Hickman, 67, who reported the scam to police, branded the conmen "stupid".

"I knew straightaway they were fraudsters, as soon as they told me not to tell anyone else in the household about it. I think they must have been stupid – they left a mobile number for me to call.

"And they told me to expect a call from judge's chambers in Kingston but they must have been watching too many American films because it doesn't work like that in this country."

Miss Hickman did not let the men in on their second visit to her Carlton Road home last Thursday, and left their phone calls unanswered. She believes they would have tried to charge her a handling fee to get back the money they claimed she was wrongly charged for the drive.

"It left me feeling angry," she said. "They might think they can target older people, but they forget we have a lifetime of experience."

When Miss Hickman phoned the number they left from her mobile it was answered by a man who said he was "Dave the window cleaner".

Neighbourhood inspector Angie Austin urged residents to ensure callers were genuine before engaging with them.

"We get reports of people trying to commit fraud in a number of ways," she said. "What we generally say to people is that people like Trading Standards will not go out looking for cases, they have them reported to them and follow them up. They do not go out looking for business.

"If anyone has any doubt, contact Trading Standards and if something is causing suspicion, contact police."

She was not aware of any other recent cases of bogus Trading Standards officers locally.
