Dear Members of the UCSD Campus Community:

As we approach the 50 year mark of our University, we wanted to share some thoughts with you, our studentfamilies, and the rest of the UCSD Community. Education is the primary mission of any university. As is the case on many other campuses nation-wide, excessive alcohol consumption poses a threat to academic success, safety, and the entire community.

For this reason we are collaborating with community leaders to ensure students are aware of their responsibilities when hosting or attending social gatherings, and remind everyone of their duty to protect their own safety and wellbeing, as well as their guests and neighbors. Since Fall2009, we have been involved in several programs and initiatives designed to reduce the risks associated with drinking:

  • Our educational campaign”Sun God Says… Tritons Party Safer”, helps students and others host safe social gatherings and be aware of their responsibility for the safety and well being of their guests and neighbors (
  • Firm but fair enforcement of existing laws that protect the community from alcohol related harm through increased enforcement which occurs in the following ways:

Party Patrols: campus and city police will continue to increase their patrols in neighborhoods surrounding the campus.

Compliance Checks: increased campus and city police efforts to make sure retailers who sell alcohol are doing so within the limits of the law (i.e. checking ID, not serving/selling to underage customers, not over-serving customers, etc.)

DUI Checkpoints: campus and city police jointly facilitate more sobriety checkpoints near the campus and throughout the greater San Diego area.

We are all aware of the tragedies that can result from unwise choices about alcohol, and that alcohol abuse is a serious societal problem. Together we can make our campus and local community a fun and safe place to live and socialize responsibly. We are very proud of the nationally acclaimed programs we have developed to provide education and raise awareness on our campus. Published data confirms thatmost UCSD students do make healthy choices. But mostly, we are proud of YOU, the students and members of the community that make those choices and decisions. Let’s all make a commitment to our collective responsibility, and work together to continue that trend and keep our campus safe.

If you have questions or concerns please contact us or our Health Educator coordinating this initiative, Lupe Samaniego-Kraus at (858) 534-3874.
