Dear Members & Friends of Canoa Ranch Golf Club & Torres Blancas Golf Club,

Hooray! The summer (and the Monsoon) is finally behind us, and for the most part, we survived.

Both the courses have been overseeded, and Torres Blancas has been open long enough that we are not restricting carts to the paths any longer!

Thank you all for your kind comments about the overseeding. We appreciate the support and agree that this year looks a lot better than last year. The Rye seed all germinated, and is growing.

The overseeding process is quite involved and labor intensive. The next time you see someone on the maintenance crew, thank them for their hard work. Their effort will result is great playing conditions this winter. We are planning our annual “thank you” barbeque for the maintenance staffs later this month. If you want to contribute (water, Gatorade, dessert, etc) let me know. I will make sure the staff knows it’s from the members.

Canoa Ranch Golf Club will reopen on Monday, October 3rd. If you remember, we had to delay the overseeding process due to Hurricane Newton that came through in early September and slowed us down for a few days. When you play golf at Canoa Ranch, please remember it’s only been 2 weeks and not all the seed on the fairways and greens has germinated. Every week the courses will get better and better, but we cannot rush Mother Nature. The Rye seed takes 7-10 days to germinate, and another 5 days to grow long and strong enough to mow. Bent Grass seed takes 10-14 days to germinate and another 7-10 days to mow down low enough to recognize a greens speed over 5. So, please be patient and know that we will, over time, take the mowing heights down without risking the health of the plant.

For those of you returning from your summer residence, you will see a new face in the restaurants. We are fortunate to have Mr. Dean Fey (pronounced like Tina Fey) as our Food & Beverage Manager of The Grill on the Green and The Abrego Grill. Dean has a very extensive background in all aspects of F&B operations and is uniquely skilled in customer service standards. He has been an owner/operator of successful restaurants in Tubac, and has worked at several high profile restaurants in Las Vegas. Dean will be working closely with Chef Alex and Josie and Kimberly to develop new menus and procedures for both establishments. He and Alex have already developed a great menu for The Abrego Grill that features simple, tasty, well thought out Mid-Western fare and features such classics as an Open Face Hot Roast Beef Sandwich with mashed potatoes and green beans, Idaho Pub Skins, ST. Louis Style BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich, house made soup of the day and many others.

We are excited to kick off our 2016-2017 season with a few important events over the next 6 weeks.

On October 15th we are hosting our inaugural Member Best Ball and Tailgate party at Torres Blancas Golf Club. It is a fun event with a Tailgate themed food event immediately following.

Then, on November 12th and 13th we are hosting our annual Welcome Back event at Canoa Ranch. On Saturday, November 12th the John Jacobs Golf Schools & Academies will be on hand holding free clinics throughout the day, and on Sunday, November 13th we will have our golf event followed by a buffet. Again, look for separate email invitations to this event. We encourage all members to participate, and to bring a non-member guest to the events.

I know I’ve talked to you many times about the websites. We contracted with a different website host and the product they delivered is not good enough. I made the decision to scrap the websites and start over. We are in the process of re-developing both sites so they work. Ultimately they will be very interactive and informative, and formatted to allow you to view them on any mobile device. Our goal is to make the sites as user friendly as possible and allow members access to a special designated page(s) where you can make tee times, dinner reservations, post comments, sign up for events and view recent results. My apologies for the delay, I want this to be right, so I’m not rushing the process.

For those of you just returning, Welcome Back! For those of you who stuck it out with us through the summer, Thank You! And, to all that have rejoined for the 2016-2017 season, Thank You!
