This year we are holding our President’s dinner at The Warren Golf & Country Club, Woodham Walter, near Maldon, CM9 6RW. Their banqueting facilities are in a converted 18th century barn with plenty of space in two adjacent rooms for pre-dinner drinks. We have kept to the start time of 7.00 for 7.30 pm dinner, which hopefully will make it easier for some members to attend.

Our speaker will be Nick James from BAE Systems Advanced Technology Centre, and will talk about comets. Nick is the lead engineer for the IFMS system, a very sensitive digital radio system which is installed in European Space Agency ground stations around the world. This system is responsible for communicating with deep-space probes and measuring their range and velocity with very high precision. The IFMS supports all ESA spacecraft but was in the news last year as a crucial part of the infrastructure supporting the Rosetta probe during the landing of the Philae spacecraft on Comet 67P. In his spare time Nick is an astronomer with a particular interest in comets and the author of a book about these mysterious objects. He will focus on what we know and what we don’t know about comets. Why these deep-frozen left-overs from the formation of our Solar System are of particularly interest to us and how we managed to put a spacecraft in to orbit around one of them!

The charge for a 3-course meal will be £24.50 per person, with all drinks being purchased separately. Dress code is Dinner Jacket, Lounge Suit or Smart Casual. Tables are preferably in sixes/sevens/eights. I would appreciate you organising groups if possible. The Council looks forward to seeing you there.
