Dear Jaguar Families:

After evaluation of MAP scores and reading placement in the 5th grade, your child has been placed in a Pre-AP Reading & Composition class.

In this reading class, students will be reading various novels, poetry, and plays and will be applying Pre-AP strategies to each. In order to meet the Common Core Standards, students will be analyzing the pieces for Reading Strategies, Literary Elements, Literary Forms, Figures of Speech, Sound Devices, and Literary Techniques. In addition, the students will be utilizing various writing strategies, such as the process of composition, structural elements, and different types of composition.

The students will not have a text book, but will use independent literary pieces, journals, and excerpts of multi-layered literature. In addition, the students will have homework on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Homework will be in the form of reading, writing pieces, and journal entries. Students will also have additional reading requirements outside of class.

Students will receive grades for class participation, journals, end-of-book assessments, literature packets, and projects. This class will be strenuous and students will need to be dedicated and willing to complete all assignments.

Please take a moment and look over our plan for this class. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support of your child! Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
