Dear Donkey Owners,
We are a research group at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Texas A&M University actively engaged in analyzing the equine genome. Part of our research is focused on the Y chromosome (found only in males). Though the primary aim in this project is to develop male specific genetic markers that could be used to identify and analyze genes associated with stallion fertility, we are also focusing on developing tools and resources that could:
i) discover male specific genetic factors common/diverse between different extant equids (horse, zebra, donkey, etc.) allowing us to study the evolution of the Y chromosome in these related species and perhaps other species as well,
ii) accurately and efficiently trace patrilines in various breeds of horses, and
iii) show evolutionary relationships between different breeds as evidenced through Y chromosome markers.
To facilitate this work, we are requesting your collaboration and contribution in the form of blood samples. These samples will be used to isolate and archive DNA, which will be analyzed with Y-chromosome markers presently being developed in our laboratory. For the current phase of the work, we would like to obtain blood samples from 15 unrelated males for each breed.
For this work, we will need ~30 ml blood (3-4 EDTA-purple top tubes) from each animal. Once we know that you are willing to contribute to our research, we will send you the tubes for blood collection, and pay for overnight shipment of blood samples back to our laboratory. If needed, the laboratory can also pay for veterinary service fees up to $40. Your kind cooperation to facilitate this research would be greatly appreciated.
