Dear Families,

I have been so pleased at the parent response to helping with the study of the letters and sounds of the alphabet. Of course we work on them many times each day in class but the one-to-one extra help at home really makes a difference. Thank you!

We have enjoyed our frog unit the past two weeks. We have emphasized the life cycle of the frog and talked about several other life cycles. I’m not sure our tadpoles will make it to “complete” frogs, but the students have enjoyed watching them.

In math we continue to work on rote counting by 1s, positional words (over, under, above, up, beside, etc.), counting of objects to 6, recognizing numerals to 20, writing numbers to 10, and shapes. This week in math we also began learning about cones, rectangular prisms, cubes, spheres, and pyramids.

In our beginning reading we are concentrating on beginning sounds and have introduced many more letters. I found some good sources on the computer for working with students who are having difficulty with letter and sound recognition just by typing in “learning the alphabet.” They listed different ways you could work with your child without doing the same thing all the time. There were even some free video songs of the sounds of letters that your child could listen to if you have a computer available.

Next week we are beginning a seed unit. If you have some “dead heads” of flowers that we could open to look at the seeds, please send them.

In Religion, our class is studying about God’s gifts of light and water.

Thank you for all you do,

Gina Cayce, Kindergarten
