ONGOING DISCUSSION OF BOOK -BLACK MALE COLLEGIANS:

There was a follow up discussion with African American male success at GRCC and what the next steps are on behalf of Deans’ Council. This will likely be an ongoing topic at our Deans’ Council meetings so the whole college is on the same page for inclusive leadership and helping all our students feel a sense of belonging.

○Next Steps:

Provost Chesley will look at the possibility of an inclusive leadership training program. A committee of the following staff volunteered to meet further with her to discuss this in more detail: Sheila, Valerie, John, Bill and Julie.

DISCUSSION OF TERRELL STRAYHORN’S OPENING DAY PRESENTATION:

Council discussed Dr. Strayhorn’s opening day presentation and what they tookand applied from this presentation.

Giving Assignment for Deans’ Council Members: Think about your role as a leader in the groups you lead. Purposefully have a discussion about Terrell Strayhorn’s discussion of belonging. Have a discussion in your area, what specific steps in your unitcan you do better at making the people you work with feel like they belong and the students you come into contact with feel like they belong. We will share at the next meeting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

●Domingo HG: Next Wednesday 9/29 at 7 pm, is the first Diversity lecture series – New Civil Rights Movement. He encouraged everyone to attend.

●Dave S.: Movie night in Holland at the Lakeshore “The Perfect Game.” Was going to show outside (80 people showed up) then it downpoured so they went inside auditorium and everyone stayed for movie.

●Amy K.: Last week GRCC was first community college in MI to start a partnership with Fiat. Our students have the opportunity to come out of our job training with Level 0 and job warranty work. Many dealers in the area signed an agreement to hire students in our program from GRCC.

●Amy K.: New brewery opens Friday with a ribbon cutting. Hours for brewery are on Thursdays and Fridays 5:30-8:30 pm. Reminder that it’s a classroom so be patient with the students as they learn.

●Amy K.: Next Thursday is ATC’s 25th Anniversary. Please RSVP so they can plan accordingly. Invite was from President Ender.

●Julie P.: October 5th is Manufacturing Day from 3-6 pm at the MTECH – come tour, get treats, and talk/ask questions.

●Vicki J.: ArtPrize started yesterday. The Collins Gallery on 4th floor of Main Bldg. and Spectrum Lobby are ArtPrize venues for the next 3 weeks.
