DCS Community Meeting Minutes

April 20, 2016

Carl Sandburg Library

Presiding: Amy Drackert

Minutes: Mary Oemig

Principal Report (Heather Frazier)

DCS is receiving the 2015 Washington Achievement Award in Overall Excellence, English Language Arts Growth and Math Growth. Heather reported by phone as she is out sick.

Teacher Report (Diane Jewell)

We have funds in the budget we will be using to bring the poet Ken Nesbit for a day. He is a professional author who does tours and is hysterically funny. He charges $1400 plus travel expenses normally. He will charge us $1200 flat. It will be a full day experience: each class and then all together. If you would like to purchase a book he will do book signings. No pressure, but Mrs. Jewell will send home a booklist for those who are interested. It tends to be a popular option among the students.

Treasurer’s Report (Mat Pruitt/Sunni Bannon)

We have 8 open pledges. A few are on monthly payment. A few are unpaid at all. Expected budget surplus after Spring Camp is $18,308.19.

Budget was spreadsheet was presented. The negative number represents forecasted deficit of about $2,700, but in reality we won’t run a deficit. Reminder to teachers and families to submit their receipts. We have a reimbursement form on the DCS website and they are in Janet’s office on the counter.

Elections (Adrianne Yang)

Election Ballot Results. No ballots were contested. We still need a person to serve a 1 year term as First Secretary. Newly elected officials are:

John Kammerer Second Treasurer

Sean Donohoe Second Secretary

Still need volunteers for Running Club and Spies Like Us

Spring Camp(Amy Drackert/Jennifer Pruitt)

More emails will be coming out. Starting tomorrow morning you will be able to register. Cost for a family of four will be $140.

Jennifer sent out a mail about needing to collect yogurt and deli containers for a craft project. Include lids.

They are seeking adults to spend a few days in costumes on Saturday. Volunteers will pretend to a local. Especially looking for people will to play an alien.

Wear Star Wars costumes if you have them. Feel free to bring Star Wars themed decorations to create spaces that have a Star Wars theme.

Band kids should consider doing Star Wars music for skit night.

Mary suggested a very short Community Meeting during the Saturday lunch to fill open elected positions and volunteer positions.

Suggestion to have an event for the whole community in the fall kind of like Spring Camp (perhaps not as big). Adrianne Yang said she would be working on some events. Mary Oemig suggested have short (half hour) Community meetings at a few more family events to better meet the needs of families with a parent who travels often or works evenings.

Community Outreach(Pam Hurst/Renee Werth)

Reading for Literacy is the next Community Outreach event (work we do to improve our local, regional, and world communities). Pam and Renee give the kids perspective on how they learn versus kids in other countries.

For reading above and beyond homework reading (set increments defined by grade level) to earn a voucher. The parent signs off on a voucher to document the additional reading. We have this cool bookshelf where your name goes on the bookshelf with your name for each voucher. Last year we raised $250. The money is in our budget but the kids “earn” the value by reading. For the voracious reading, it is limited to 1 voucher per day. Starts May 16th. Will be an announcement and form sent then.

Elections Report(Adrianne Yang)

22 ballots. All were approved. No write ins.

Fundraising(Sean Donohue)

Need to have a meeting to decide when to start selling. Will likely be a presale.

New Business

Last year we observed that the pictures of the graduating 5th graders: name, photo, where they are going to and their favorite memory. Suggested we do some similar. Mrs. Subcleff will chat with Mrs. Glassey. Recommendation that she delegate to her room parent if she decides to do.

Stephanie Develle and Lindsay Brisimitzis have photo board up to help people identify each other. Submit an updated photo if you have one. Will bring to Community Meetings and look for a place where we can put up at DCS. Amy Drackert asked that they come to Spring Camp.

Pascal Harroch suggested that we try to do a group photo on the beach.

Staff Appreciation(Sunni Bannon)

Staff was dismissed for appreciations chat. Sunni Bannon handed out the overview on Staff Appreciation week for those not familiar with it.

THIS PART IS SECRET SO THE TEACHERS DON’T SEE IT. READ YOUR NO STAFF EMAIL FOR DETAILS.Doing more collaboratively with Sandburg this year.
