Day #1 Colonization Simulation Check Off Sheet

MATERIALS NEEDED: Choose ONE students to get all the materials your group needs.

3. TWO diary sheets (for Days 1 and 2)

4. THREE Ship Log sheets

5. Shipboard Allotment Sheet

THINGS TO DO: Your group MUST have all of these items completed by the end of Day 1 to get full credit for the day. If you have a question, please send only ONE student to ask a teacher.

1. Choose a name for your group and write it on your folder. All materials must be in this folder at the end of every day and it must be turned in.

2. Choose someone in your group to keep your DIARY. Use the diary to keep track of ALL your daily activities. Anything that happens to you or you plan for should be written in this diary. A new diary must be filled out each day!

3. Look at your settlement area map and choose a place for your settlement. Mark your settlement on the map and have it approved by the teacher.

4. Choose a month to set sail. A teacher will be around to let you pick a month. Write the month in your diary.

5. Name your settlement area.

6. Read over the SHIPBOARD ALLOTMENT SHEET. (Remember, if you have a question send only one student to ask the teacher.)

7. Fill out the following items on your SHIP LOG SHEETS:

a. Name each ship

b. Identify by occupation all the people who will be traveling on each

ship. List the people on the back of each ship. (EVERY SHIP WILL

HAVE THE SAME NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN EACH

OCCUPATION, FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU HAVE 10

CARPENTERS ON A SHIP, YOU MUST HAVE 10

CARPENTERS ON EACH OF THE OTHER 2 SHIPS.)

c. Begin to load the cargo on each ship. (EVERY SHIP WILL

HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF THE SAME TYPE OF

CARGO, FOR EXAMPLE IF YOU HAVE 2 HORSES ON A

SHIP, YOU MUST HAVE 2 HORSES ON EACH OF THE

OTHER 2 SHIPS.)

THINGS TO DO: Your group MUST have all of these items completed by the end of Day 2 to get full credit for the day. If you have a question, please send only ONE student to ask a teacher.

1. Finish completing the last SHIP LOG SHEETS if needed.

2. Show all 3 ship log sheets to a teacher for approval. HOORAY! You are ready to set sail if all 3 ships are approved.

3. Send one student to draw a BEFORE SAILING CONSEQUENCE CARD. Take the card back to your group and read it to them. Solve the problem. Remember to write all this down in your new diary.

4. Send one student to draw a SAILING CONSEQUENCE CARD. Take the card back to your group and read it to them. Solve the problem. Remember to write all this down in your new diary.

5. You are now sailing to the America. Are you keeping track of all that happened in your Day #2 Diary?

MATERIALS NEEDED:

1. Your group’s folder (should have all your materials from days 1 and 2).

2. Activities within Settlement paper

3. Roster of Colonists/Jobs Assigned Each Month paper

THINGS TO DO: Your group MUST have all of these items completed by the end of Day 3 to get full credit for the day. If you have a question, please send only ONE student to ask a teacher.

1. You have sailed to America. Send one student to draw a LANDING CONSEQUENCE CARD. Take the card back to your group and read it to them. Solve the problem. Remember to write all this down in your new diary.

2. Show your ship logs to the teacher for approval. We hope you still have 3 ships, 150 people and some cargo left!

3. You have landed in America and are now ready to build your settlement. In your diary write the month you landed in America.

4. On your ROSTER OF COLONISTS/JOBS ASSIGNED EACH MONTH

paper, circle the month your group landed in America. Under the ROSTER OF COLONISTS heading, list the occupations of the people and how many of each landed successfully. This information is on the back of your SHIP LOG SHEETS. Get your ROSTER OF COLONISTS approved by a teacher.

5. Check how much of your cargo and supplies are left.

6. Read over your ACTIVITES WITHIN THE SETTLEMENT paper.

7. Decide what activities you are going to do for the month you land in America. Write the activities down on the JOBS ASSIGNED sheet under the month you landed.

Grade/Points for Day 3

Days #4 & 5 Colonization Simulation Check Off Sheet

MATERIALS NEEDED:

1. Your group’s folder (should have all your materials from days 1 - 3).

2. Large piece of construction paper

THINGS TO DO: Your group MUST have all of these items completed by the end of Days 4 & 5 to get full credit for the day. If you have a question, please send only ONE student to ask a teacher.

1. Send one student to the teacher to draw a SETTLEMENT CONSEQUENCE CARD. Take the card back to your group and read it to them. Solve the problem. Remember to write all this down in your new diary.

2. Select the activities to completed for the next month and write them down on your JOBS ASSIGNED sheet. Get it approved by the teacher. Remember to write all this down in your diary. Build your settlement.

3. After all groups have landed, every 10 minutes will become one month. Each month you will need to do the following:

a. Choose and solve a SETTLEMENT CONSEQUENCE CARD

b. Choose activities for the month and have them approved by the teacher

c. Build your settlement

d. Write each consequence card and ALL that happens to your colony in

your diary.

4. After the game is over, each group will share their experiences with the class. Talk about the things that happened before sailing, during sailing, during landing, and building your settlement. Show us your settlement. How many people did you have left? What was your biggest mistake? Do you have any advice for those wishing to come to America?

150 People (no more than 30 soldiers/sailors)

All people must be identified by their occupations

Each ship can hold 8000 pounds of cargo

Each person needs 1 quart of water per day

Each person needs ¼ pound of food per day

Horse: 1000 pounds. Eats 10 lbs. of food/day. Drinks 10 Gallons water/day

Pig: 100 lbs. 2lbs.food/day. 1 gal. Water/day

Chicken: 3 lbs. each. ½ lb. Food per day

Cow: 900 lbs. 15 lbs. food/day. 10gal.water/day

Dogs: 25 lbs. ¼ gallon water/day

Nails: 50 per pound

Water: 8 lbs./gallon

Guns: 10 pounds (musket)

400 pounds (cannon)

Must also buy powder and lead

Cloth: 5 yards/pound

All other weights are at the discretion of the teacher.
