Hospital/Company Celebrates National Donate Life Month this April

City, Calif., April X, 2014.-This April, Hospital/Company celebrates National Donate Life Month, an observance that commemorates those who have received or continue to wait for a lifesaving transplant.

“This month serves not only do we honor the lives of those who have given and received, it is also an opportunity to renew our commitment to saving lives and encourage everyone to register as an organ and tissue donor,” said Hospital/Company representative.

At present, more than 21,000 California residents are waiting to receive life-saving hearts, livers, lungs, kidneys and other organs. However, there are not enough donors to meet the growing need in the state; the need is even more direct across the country. Currently over 121,000 people are on the national waiting list, while 18 people die every day waiting for an organ transplant.

More than 10 million Californians have signed-up to be donors at the Department of Motor Vehicles, making the Donate Life California Organ & Tissue Registry the largest in the nation. However, only about 30% of the population with a driver’s license has opted to get their “pink dot”, compared to more than 70% in the states with the highest percentages.

Among the reasons for this low percentage are misleading beliefs, including many adults over the age of 50 that think their advanced age or medical conditions are reasons to rule themselves. In fact, anyone can be a donor, a 93-year-old kidney donor and a 99-year-old cornea donor set the national records for oldest organ and tissue donors. Age and most medical conditions do not exclude one from donating, and all potential donors are evaluated by medical professionals on a case-by-case basis.

Hospital/Company will celebrate Donate Life Month by describe activities in conjunction with OneLegacy, the non-profit, federally designated organ, eye and tissue recovery organization serving the seven-county greater Los Angeles area.

The biggest event held in the Southland to celebrate National Donate Life Month will be the Donate Life Run/Walk, organized by OneLegacy and held annually in Cal State Fullerton, which this year will take place on Saturday, April 26. The event was created by Kathleen and Craig Hostert, a wife and husband team who want to inspire others to become organ and tissue donors. After four years on dialysis,
