DATABASE LESSON
WORKSHEET
- Estimate the rank of each of the continents in square miles from smallest to largest in size. Fill out column one.
Continent Name
/ Estimate rank in square miles before looking at maps (1-7 one being smallest) / Estimate rank in square miles after looking at maps / Actual rankAnswer after completing #9
Australia
South America
Europe
Africa
Antarctica
North America
Asia
- Go the the following sites, look at the maps, and estimate the continents again. Fill out column two in #1.
- Based on the maps in #2 predict the following:
- The largest size continent in square miles______
- The smallest size continent in square miles______
- Continent with the largest population______
- Continent with the smallest population______
- Continent occupying the largest percentage of the Earth’s land______
- Continent occupying the smallest percentage of the Earth’s land______
- You have been given an outline of the shape of your continent. Name your continent. Name______
Based on the information that you have at this point estimate:
- Population of your Continent______
- Percent of Earth’s land your Continent takes______
- Size of your Continent in square miles______
- Go to this site.
- Click on the image of your continent and record each of the following about your continent in the table at the end of the directions: Compare the actual answers with your estimations in #4.
- Population ______.
- % of Earth’s land ______.
- Size in square miles ______.
- # of countries ______.
- Create a database with field names of Continent name (format as text), Population (format as number, field size=double, format=general number, decimal places=auto) , % of Earth’s land (format as number, field size=double, format=percent, decimal places=2) , Size in square miles(format as number, field size=double, format=general number, decimal places=auto) , # of countries(format as number, field size=double, format=general number, decimal places=auto) .
- Enter the data collected by each group into the teacher station computer. Print a copy for each group. Students enter information into their database, sort by Continent name in ascending order, and print table. Name table-table1yourlastname
- Do the following to determine the accuracy of your predictions:
- Sort by size to determine largest and smallest.
- Sort by population to determine largest and smallest.
- Sort by % of Earth’s land to determine largest and smallest.
- Fill out last column in #1
- Create a report of Continent name, Size in square miles, Population and % of Earth’s land with size in square miles sorted in ascending order. Print a copy for each person in the group. Name: report1yourlastname.
- Sort size in square miles in ascending order. Copy and paste Continent name, Size in square miles, and Population from database to Excel and create a Custom types, lines on two axes, line chart showing the relationship of the variables. Copy and paste line chart into a Word document and answer the question in a paragraph. What is the general relationship between Population size and land Size in square miles? Print chart for each person in group.
