Database Administrator

Employment Terms:This job is a full time, benefited, FLSA Exempt/Administrative position in the Student Affairs Division that reports to the Vice President of Student Affairs.

Salary: Targeted salary is commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

One (1) year certificate or degree from a college or training institution with specific courses in

database concepts *and* Two (2) years of experience working with DBMS design, implementation

and support using Oracle, Microsoft SGL, or other industry standard DBMS

*or*

Four (4) years of experience working with DBMS design, implementation and support using Oracle,

Microsoft SQL or other industry standard DBMS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in a related field
  • Expert experience using Ellucian’s Banner student information system (SIS), Banner Document Management system and automatic job scheduling
  • Knowledge of Oracle Database administration
  • Knowledge of Unix and/or Linux environment
  • SQL and/or PL/SQL programming experience
  • SAP Crystal reports developer experience
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Previous work experience in higher education
  • Leadership experience
  • Well-versed in VMware
  • SQL and PL/SQL programming certification
  • SAP Crystal reports developer certification
  • Other appropriate certifications of benefit (Oracle, Unix/Linux, etc.)

Job summary:

The Database Administrator designs, secures, implements, and maintains supported database management

system(s) (DBMS).

Major duties:

  • Serve as the College’s Banner Database Administrator
  • Maintain physical and virtual servers and related software
  • Maintain Oracle Databases for Banner and Degree Works
  • Maintain Windows servers as necessary for interoperation with Banner and to support the college intranet
  • Work with information technology department, when necessary, to build and modify scripts and data for student college technology initiatives
  • Assist users with scheduling training through the TCSG system office
  • Plan and implement Banner and Degree Works upgrades from the System Office; substantial after-hours work may be required at times, as needed
  • Maintain all backups to ensure capability for restoration
  • Provide support to faculty and staff; assist super-users with development of new automated processes, changes, questions, and concerns
  • Monitor system log files to prevent security intrusions
  • Support the overall mission of the College by creating ad hoc data reports, developing automated processes, and maintaining existing reports and processes
  • Apply knowledge of the organization’s goals and objectives
  • Analyze data and functional requirements from college units requesting assistance with information or automation
  • Test software and analyze output prior to delivery to the user; adheres to positive programming and testing practices in a manner to ensure data integrity, confidentiality, consistency, and reliability
  • Supervise and provide direction for subordinate staff
  • Provide adequate technical documentation of developed processes and systems to ensure ease of maintenance or enhancement of the systems by subsequent programmers
  • Work effectively in a diverse community and meet the needs of diverse student populations
  • Conduct research into administrative system issues and products as required
  • Apply knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws
  • Present ideas in user-friendly language

  • Review and approveleave requests, travel requests, etc. to ensure conformity with established policies and procedures
  • Prepare reports in requested format within requested time frame
  • Develop and/or assist with the advancement of policies and procedures and recommend changes to effectively meet the goals and requirements of the department
  • Provide leadership by working with management and staff to determine strategic positioning, trend-setting initiatives and elimination of duplication of processes
  • Maintain knowledge of assigned department and give updates to management on services, operations, and projects
  • Define and set goals based on strategic direction of the technical college and customer needs
  • Evaluate employee(s) at scheduled intervals upon reviewing all relevant information
  • Participate in meetings to ensure department goals are in line with agency or technical college goals
  • Conduct regular evaluation of services provided and make adjustments as needed
  • Maintain up-to-date with policies, procedures, and state or federal laws that may impact department initiatives
  • Maintain excellent working relationships with, and serve as a liaison to, internal and external customers
  • Participate in appropriate professional development to maintain current knowledge applicable to the department and role
  • Travel for state meetings, trainings, professional development, and system upgrades as necessary
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
