Microsoft SQL Server 2000

2006
  • Performed Database Administration (DBA) duties for an entire division of Cincinnati Bell, including eight dedicated SQL Servers and 100 databases, supporting in excess of 400 processes and jobs. DBA specific duties included:
  • Creating a disaster recovery strategy, including managing database and transaction log backups, and maintaining several mission-critical databases in a “warm-backup” status.
  • Providing database security through assignment of server logins, database users, and permissions settings on those access points
  • Providing development support when necessary with the establishment of development and test environments
  • Assisting other developers in the creation of stored procedures, indexes, triggers, and queries as required
  • Monitoring the health of all database servers in terms of resource usage and database growth, and suggesting improvements as appropriate
  • Overseeing the successful completion of scheduled jobs and scripts
  • Setting up and maintaining replication to allow for the consistent flow of data between servers
  • Maintaining the availability of support services related to SQL Server, including SQL Mail
  • Setting up maintenance plans for the purposes of improving database efficiency
  • Created a high-availability, stable customer database by loading data from the billing application. The data had to be transformed from a record-type based text file to a relational data model. The resulting system provided a data source for reporting purposes that mimicked a database which the organization had paid several million dollars for.
  • Led a development project to handle rebate submissions through an entirely database-driven application, resulting in reduced expenses due to improper payouts to invalid submissions, and fewer customer complaints to upper management.
  • Isolated a customer management interface from several systems which had previously independently handled the customer’s features, lowering IT overhead and making a more consistent customer experience. This process was driven entirely through DTS packages, with calls to external Web Service APIs
  • Replaced a file-based batch billing process with a DTS package-driven transactional process, reducing overhead by eliminating interactions between the systems that managed the batch process. The process ran multiple threads to improve the efficiency of the billing APIs being utilized.
Facilitated the cataloging of hundreds or orphaned DTS packages, documenting their owners, data and server dependencies, and utilized SQL and non-SQL objects. This project spanned several weeks and was part of a major system migration.
