DANE COUNTY CULTURAL AFFAIRS COMMISSION

2008 CALL FOR ART

Attention Dane County Visual Artists

The Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission (DCCAC) issues a call for artists to submit art for consideration and inclusion in the Cultural Affairs Commission’s signature 2010 art calendar and 2009 art poster and companion bookmark. The 2010 calendar will be the 11th edition and 2009 poster the 28th in an annual series. Each year, nearly 10,000 calendars and the same number of posters are distributed throughout Dane County and beyond. They have become beloved icons that highlight the vitality of Dane County’s artistic and cultural landscape.

Two-dimensional art in all mediums will be considered. Selections will be made from images submitted. Fourteen images will be chosen for the calendar and one image will be chosen for the poster and bookmark. Selection criteria applied by DCCAC Art Advisory Committee include: artistic quality, representation of Dane County, market appeal, and illustration of the annual theme. Artists must be Wisconsin residents at the time of application; Dane County artists receive preference.

If selected artwork needs to be re-photographed to meet production specifications, the Cultural Affairs Commission will assist. In addition, for the calendar, $100 will be awarded per image (14 in total) to each selected artist for reproduction rights. For the poster, $500 will be awarded to the selected artist for reproduction rights. Wisconsin galleries representing selected artists also will be acknowledged, if desired.

2008 Theme

The theme for 2008 art submissions is Festivals and Celebrations. In the Cultural Affairs Commission’s next art calendar (2010) and art poster (2009), showcased art will feature festivals and celebrations that illustrate our Dane County home and what makes it distinctive. Included might be the extra special or unusual, ordinary and familiar, or typical activities and events that span the seasons and engage citizens, families, neighbors and friends---all scenes that in some way depict Dane County. Visible and public examples, among many, include Syttende Mai, Willy Street Fair, Winter Festival, Chinese Culture Day, Festa Italia, Sweet Corn Festival, Dane County Fair, Isthmus Jazz Festival and even a ritual associated with a UW Badger game. More personal and intimate examples include a first day of school or high school graduation, Fourth of July tradition, birthday party or wedding, quinceañera, fall harvest, family reunion, and Thanksgiving feast. Favored images will include attributes and features that remind us of our Dane County home.

Application deadline: September 1, 2008.

Selection process will be completed by December 31, 2008 and all applicants will be notified by then.
