DANE COUNTY 4-H LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP

SPONSORED BY MADISON WEST KIWANIS FOUNDATION

DAVID P. DICKSON

The David P. Dickson 4H Scholarship is established in memory of Dr. David Dickson, Professor of Dairy Science at UW-Madison for over three decades and long time member of Madison West Kiwanis. Dr. Dave, as he was universally known to his students, was revered not only as a teacher but as a dairy cattle judge and coach of the University’s Cattle Judging Team, in which position he lead his teams to seven National Collegiate Championships. For Dr. Dave, his devotion to cattle judging was sealed in 1960, when he earned high individual honors at the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest. As a member of Madison West Kiwanis, Dr. Dickson was a visionary and tireless leader who poured his heart and many talents into community service through the club’s numerous projects. He continued to give his best to the world until he died in 2010 at the age of 71.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Because Dr. Dickson was a leader in serving both the University community through his teaching and coaching, and the greater Madison community through his activity with Madison West Kiwanis, this scholarship seeks to identify the leaders of tomorrow and assist them in gaining the education that will make it possible for their leadership potential to be fully realized. The ideals that inspired Dr. Dickson are clearly reflected in the Objects of Kiwanis International:

• to give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life,

• to encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships,

• to promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards,

• to develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship,

• to provide, through Kiwanis Clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render

altruistic service, andto build better communities,

• to cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism, which make

possible theincrease of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.
