DA269/2017 - HAVE YOUR SAY BY JUNE 26
WHAT IS DA269/2017?An application fora quarry for the extraction of up to 25,000 cu m or approximately 65,000 tonnes of rock per annum.
WHERE IS IT? The quarry will be on a Bundabah/Fame Cove property 1500m across open water and land from North Arm Cove, 620m across land from Bundabah and 2750m across land from Pindimar.
WHEN IS IT?DA 269/2017 is on exhibition now: and at Council offices. Comments are invited from the public now.
WHY BE WORRIED ABOUT IT?This is an industrial type process in a quiet and beautiful area. We believe the DA and associated reports fail to address adequately many issues that could seriously affect the amenity value of the place we love and live in.
WHAT ARE THE ISSUES?
- Noise and Vibration. Extraction will probably be by bulldozer or rock breaker. The rock may need crushing. Many hours a week, many weeks a year of noisy operation clearly audible across land and open water.
- Traffic. Up to 5000 diesel truck movements a year.
- Dust. Dust from the quarry. Dust from the trucks. In the air, in our lungs, in our water tanks, on our roofs, on our washing.
- Times. No quarry operating time limits are guaranteed. The volumes suggest night time operations with flood lighting may be necessary.
- Rehabilitation. No limits on the life of the quarry. Rehabilitation is unlikely ever to be enforced.
- Visual impacts. The quarry is on top of an 85m hill which is in a direct line of sight from North Arm Cove and Bundabah. The applicant claims we won't see it. Why won't we see it?
- Environment. We are very concerned about the owner's history of non-compliance regarding environmental damage and development regulations on this and adjacent lots.
- Pollution. We are assured that pollution control will be maintained through, "a self-auditing program .... based on a check sheet". This is nonsense given the applicant's record.
- Amenity. No assurances have been given that amenity values will be protected. Who wants a quarry on their doorstep?
