Minutes of the December 7, 2012 meeting

The meeting was called to order at 2:17 p.m. by Committee Chair Greg Cook.
I. The November 16, 2012 meeting minutes were approved unanimously on aMarshall Anderson/Angela Harlan motion.
II.Chair Cook announced that Bryce Chinault will be graduating in a few weeks; the
Committee wishes him well.
Chair Cook thanked the Committee for agreeing to electronically vote to create the new
CIBME Prefix. This proposal was unanimously passed via email vote.

A motion was made to approve Curricular Action Items III.A-F by Jolly Emrey and
seconded by Stuart Glosser. The motion was carried unanimously.

Robert Boostrom made the motion to approve Curricular Action C1.1. Chris
Henige seconded the motion. There was no further discussion and the motion
passedunanimously.

D. Curricular Actions from the College of Letters and Sciences
Chair Cook thanked the Committee for allowing a friendly amendment to

the agenda by adding BIOLOGY 225 – Prereq “Change to Science of Forensic
Analysis.” This proposal was accidentally omitted from the November 16,
2012 UCC Agenda. Marshall Anderson made a motion to have the amendment made and to approve the Prereq Change to “Science of Forensic Analysis.”
Mike Allsen seconded the motion. Liz Hachten presented the changes. There was no further discussion and the motion carried unanimously.

1. Actions from the Department of Languages and Literatures
Chris Henige made the motion to approve the amended proposal as
noted below. Marshall Anderson seconded the amendment. There was
discussion and eventually the motion was passed unanimously.
1.1 Change in Major – Professional Writing and Book Publishing BA/BS

This proposal was approved at the 11/16/12 UCC meeting. However, the
consultation page from the Department of Art and Design (signed by
Department Chair Susan Messer) was not uploaded with the proposal. The
Art and Design Department does not approve of the change. To address this, the

proposal was revised to change the “unique requirements” section ( as a compromise).

2. Actions from the Department of Mathematical and Computer
Sciences
Angela Harlan moved to approve the deletion of the major; seconded by
Jolly Emrey. The motion passed unanimously.
2.1 Deletion of Major – Management Computer Systems - BS
V.Other
Chair Cook wanted to take a few minutes to review some of the topics as noted below. He encouraged the committee to think about policies and procedures that might need to
revised and improved.
1. Review/discussion of “Policy on Teaching Formats” and “Guidelines for
Web-based Courses” (Curriculum Handbook p. 24)
a. no more than one credit per week.
b.1 credit = 16 class hours (50 min each) + 32 student preparation
and out-of-class hours = 48 total hours.
c. 2 credits = 32 class hours (50 min each) + 64 student preparation and
out-of-class hours = 96 total hours.
d. 3 credits = 48 class hours (50 min each) + 96 student preparation and
out-of-class hours = 144 total hours.
e. Proposals for web-based courses, and courses with web-based components (e.g. hybrid) need to demonstrate how the total course hours are achieved (contact hours, student preparation, and studentout-of-class hours). Remind proposers to include this information, please.

2. Review/discussion of “Special Course Definitions and Descriptions”
(Curriculum Handbook, pp.14-17).
a. All special courses require approval before each offering.
b. Approval process is expedited: Dept. Chair, Dean, to all Deans for
5-day review period, Associate Vice Chancellor.
c. Topics for seminars and special studies courses can be repeated
for a maximum of 3 terms, but need approval for each term.
d. Workshop topics can be repeated more than 3 terms (see “Procedures,
Curriculum Proposal Form #7 ) Is it wise to have unlimited
repeats? Is this potentially avoiding regular approval process through
faculty committees?

3. Workshop vs. Special Study: what are the differences?
a. To qualify as a workshop: compared to other courses, the workshop must
be substantially more hands-on, participatory, and focused on a

specialized knowledge, method, or skill. This must be demonstrated in
the workshop proposal.
4. For discussion purposes, please see the workshop noted earlier in this

A motion was made to adjourn the meeting by Bryce Chinault and was seconded by Melanie Agnew. All approved and the motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m.
