III. Physical Data
Boiling Point: NA Melting Point: 65-80 C.
Specific Gravity: 1.1 Vapor Pressure: NA
Vapor Density: NA Solubility: insoluble in water, soluble in hydrocarbons
Percent Volatiles: none Appearance and odor: Black, odorless cold
IV. Fire and Explosion Data
Flash Point: est > 400 F
Extinguishing Media: dry chemical, foam, steam, water fog, or carbon dioxide
Special fire fighting procedures:
Optical Pitch is never found in tonnage lots, so fires would only involve relatively small amounts of material. If fire occurs in can, cover the can with the lid to put out the fire.
Treat as an oil fire.
If possible, do not use water as water causes spreading of the burning pitch. If only water is available, use gross amounts which will solidify the pitch.
Unusual fire and explosion hazards: none
V. Health Hazard Data
Inhalation of fumes
Acute: Upper respiratory tract (nose and throat) irritation.
Skin Contact
Acute: Prolonged contact may cause mild irritation.
Contact with hot material will cause thermal burns.
Eye Contact
Acute: Fumes from heated material will cause irritation.
Exposure Limits
Asphalt fume OSHA PEL none established
ACGIH TLV 5 mg/M3
NIOSH 5 mg/M3
Carcinogenicity
Asphalt NTP listed no
IARC listed yes
OSHA regulated no
Emergency First Aid Procedures
Inhalation: Remove individual to fresh air. If irritation persists, seek medical attention.
Skin: Cool hot material with ice or cold water. Do not remove pitch immediately, Cover with petroleum jelly and remove when softened. Seek medical attention for burns. A bucket of cold water should be kept nearby whenever melted pitch is handled.
Eyes: Flush with running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
VI. Reactivity Data
Stability (conditions to avoid): Stable
Incompatibility: Strong oxidizing agents
Hazardous decomposition products: Combustion yields the usual hydrocarbon combustion products.
Hazardous polymerization: will not occur
VII. Spill or Leak Procedures
Action to take for spills:
If molten, let cool to a solid, then shovel into waste receptacle. Avoid inhalation of fumes.
Waste Disposal Method:
Dispose in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, Primary disposal is in a municipal or industrial landfill. Combustion in an approved incinerator is acceptable.
VIII. Special Protection Information
Ventilation: Use a hood or other well-ventilated area when heating to avoid fume inhalation.
Respiration: Use an approved organic vapor respirator with a particulate pre-filter if fumes exceed 5 mg/M3.
Protective Clothing: Wear insulating covering when working with molten material.
Eye Protection: Wear safety glasses or safety shield when working with molten material.
IX. Special Precautions and Other Information
1. Never add water or other low boiling material to melted pitch.
2. Optical pitch is usually dispensed as a liquid at 200-400 F. The chief hazard in handling pitch is the danger of burns from splashes or spills. Protective clothing, including safety glasses, should always be used when hot pitch is being handled.
3. In use, optical pitch may become contaminated with hazardous materials from the surfaces being worked. If so, dispose of the pitch as appropriate for the surface materials.
4. Laps can usually be formed from melted pitch at 260F, and at this temperature essentially no fumes or vapor will form. We recommend casting below 275F.
5. Cycad Blackgold Optical Pitch is petroleum pitch modified by blending with natural resins long known to be non-toxic. None of these materials is considered hazardous except that, with regard to the asphalt component, our petroleum pitch supplier has indicated in their MSDS that " There are no studies to indicate that asphalt causes cancer or respiratory damage in man. This petroleum based product contains a small amount of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which have been known to cause cancer and respiratory damage in laboratory animals." Asphalt is commonly found in such everyday materials as road tar, roofing tar, roofing paper, and sealing compounds.
