  • According to the recent history of international voluntary service, Long/middle term voluntary service (LMTV) is rapidly grow very fast as more and more organizations in this movement start to send and host LMTV project in their communities. After four years working with IVS movement, CYA has been set up many projects in Cambodia. Some of them we cooperate with our local partners and some are set up by CYA itself therefore, we are now seeking motivated volunteers who wish to stay longer in our project site to make a huge change in life of our children and teenagers by providing chance to learn languages and some technology.

  1. PROJECT BACKGROUND AND AIMS

CYA/LMTV01 / FEDA, BATTAMBANG / Dec. 2014 – Nov. 2015 / 2

Ksach Poy is a village of around 3,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom are young people. It lies on the bank of the River Sangker, about 10km south-east of Battambang town. The villagers are rice farmers and the majority of them are poor: the average family income is around $ 30 USD per month. Many families supplement their rice income by growing fruit and running other enterprises such trading stalls and taxis offering transportation into town. All family members are commonly involved in some kind of work and children start helping out with the animals or crops from a very early age. Therefore, many of them drop of school for helping their family or looking for job in the neighboring countries illegally and most of the report showed that they are end up in prison or come back home with nothing in return.

Despite their living standard in rural village, young people and children from our communities are vibrant, eager to learn and friendly. We are opened to share and to learn cultures and knowledge available. Here, we have been hosting groups of volunteers from NICE Japan since July 2011 and as a result, we found that it is very important to have international volunteers in this village because many teenagers and children are willing to learn more about other cultures, other countries and it helps to keep their consistent on their study.

More importantly, we are receiving a very warm welcome from principals and teachers of Ksach Poy primary school. They believe that through our voluntary service will help their school to work more effectively for children in these surrounding communities and on the other hand, children will also see the value of education by working and communicating with our national and international volunteers. Therefore, We, CYA’s volunteers, local people, teenagers and children of Ksach Poy village, principals and teachers of Ksach Poy primary school, are welcoming you all to come and work for a better future of this small village. Short time and little effort, we can make a huge change in the life of Ksach Poy children. Ksach Poy primary school is located in the middle of Ksach Poy village and there are around 300 children are coming here for their primary education. It is a public school, which is supporting by Royal Government of Cambodia. Because it located in a rural location and small number of children studies in this school, it makes government paying less attention on it. Ksach Poy primary school has two building, one is the old building, which was built during 1960s, and re-arrange again after Khmer Rouge regime and the other one was built in year 2000 so that both of them are getting old now. There are many activities that need a helping hand from our motivated volunteers and one part of our workcamp activity is re-painting these building with art and decoration.
