CWIHP Internship Opportunities

CWIHP is currently accepting internship applications for the Spring 2012 academic semester.
Application Deadline: 15 November 2011

Background
The Cold War International History Project (CWIHP) at the Woodrow Wilson Center is currently accepting internship applications for the Spring 2012 academic semester.
The Project supports the full and prompt release of historical materials by governments on all sides of the Cold War, and seeks to accelerate the process of integrating new sources, materials and perspectives from the former "communist bloc" with the historiography of the Cold War which has been written over the past few decades largely by Western scholars reliant on Western archival sources. It also seeks to transcend barriers of language, geography, and regional specialization to create new links among scholars interested in Cold War history.
Interns at the Project will assist with research at archives and libraries, editing document manuscripts, publishing, translating, and disseminating CWIHP bulletins and working papers, coordinating scholarly conferences and answering various information requests. Interns at CWIHP are at the forefront of the debate and research over the historiography of the Cold War and will gain valuable knowledge from interaction with CWIHP staff, Woodrow Wilson Center Fellows as well as visiting scholars.
CWIHP's internship appointments are generally consistent with academic semesters (i.e. Fall, Spring, Summer / three to four months); although appointments are made throughout the year for periods of varying length. No internship will exceed one year in duration.
Eligibility
Successful applicants should have strong research and/or administrative skills; be extremely attentive to detail; be able to work independently and as part of group; be enrolled in a degree program, have graduated, and/or have been accepted to enter an advanced degree program within the next year. Knowledge of a foreign language (especially Albanian, Bulgarian, Czech, German, Hungarian, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Serbo-Croatian or Vietnamese), is helpful, as is knowledge of Adobe InDesign publishing software or coursework/experience in library science.
As a general rule, our office is looking for individuals who can work between 14 and 35 hours/week.
The Wilson Center is an equal opportunity employer and follows equal opportunity employment guidelines in the selection of its interns. Internships are open to all U.S. residents and qualified international students with F or J visas.

NATO PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY – RESEARCH ASSISTANT PROGRAMME

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly is currently looking for participants for its Research Assistant Programme, which will take place August – November 2012. Deadline to apply is 20 April 2012.

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly usually employs ten paid Research Assistants from NATO member and Associate nations each year. In general, five of these start in late January and finish in early June. The second group starts in August and finishes in late November or early-December.

Candidates from both NATO member countries and NATO Associate countries are welcome to apply for the Research Assistant Programme.

Every effort is made to assess applications objectively, but many factors must be taken into account. These include the need for a regional balance among participants in the programme. Consequently, it is rare to select two candidates from the same nation for the same intake.

Due to the large number of applicants, only candidates selected to participate will be contacted. The names of those selected will be published on this website.

All applications from candidates with the appropriate qualifications are placed on a list for consideration. Their names remain on the list for consideration for about twelve months. Candidates are requested to inform the Assembly if they cease to be available to take up a position during that time.

Tasks

The International Secretariat of the Assembly is based in Brussels and is staffed by some 30 people from the various NATO member countries. The main task of research assistants is to contribute, at the request of Committee Directors or Senior Management, to the research necessary for the drafting of the Assembly reports and other documents. The job occasionally entails some administrative work, but most tasks are research oriented.
