II. Self-evaluation of the thematic content, scientific significance of the issues at hand and of the results
Field of interest / ContributionSoftware Engineering and dependability of critical systems (safety, security, reliability): / Developed industrially validated methods for assessment of critical software systems together with major Norwegian and Scandinavian industry partners. 3 of my current PhD students are within this area, 2 of the finalized students.
Human Computer Interaction and Human Factors / My interest within this field is due to its relations to safety of complex systems. I have tutored one PhD student to finalized degree in this area.
System resilience and software architecture: / Recommended practice for the resilience of open architectures in Integrated Operations. One of my current PhD students is within this area.
Image analysis: / My initial research field, 3 of my finalized PhD students have been within this area. Currently two of the PhD students work in this area.

· MEDSAC: Assessment scheme for the certification of Medical Devices containing software. Funded by French Norwegian Foundation and Esprit. Cooperation with ISOSCOPE, Toulouse, France. Project period 2000-2003. Size ca. 5 MNOK.
· SAFE-PC: Develop and demonstrate the safety aspects of a safety system based on standard PCs and COTS. Partners DNV, Norway, University of Karlsruhe (D), Emtrion (D), Exida (D), TÜV (D), and TGR (I). Project Period: Jan 2002 - June 2004. EU 6th Framework. Size: ca. 15 MNOK.
· Safe-KBS: Demonstrate the feasibility of extending Knowledge-Based Systems to safety critical systems. EU project, fifth framework. Parners: DNV (N), Sextant/Thomson (F), Techatom (E), ENEA (I). Project period 1996-1999. Size ca. 15 MNOK.
· SMICT: NFR funded project performed in 2006-2008 with partners DNV Maritime, ABB, Kongsberg, L-3 Valmarine, Wärtsilä, Bjørge, Meyer Werft, Aker Yards, ABB. Develop methods for development and assessment of critical on-board software with the purpose of obtaining more reliable and safe control systems. The project also cooperated with Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur. Size ca. 8 MNOK.
· GoICT project (Gas and Oil ICT). Partly funded by NFR, and with partners FMC, Kongsberg, Norwegian Defence, Statoil, IO Centre, NTNU, OLF, PSA, IBM. Project period 2008-2012. Objective: to develop integral risk management approach to improve reliability of information and IT in complex systems for Integrated Operations. Size 25 MNOK, 2 PhD students and one post. doc. at NTNU.
