Annoying Reflections /
  • Cut to A4 size and have two worksheets if possible.
  • Redraft.
  • Magnify in sections.
  • Redraft
  • Or guidance given with magnifier use.
  • Enrol teacher support, and thereafter could use Post-It reminders on the copies.
  • Carry a “bag of tricks” with you.
  • Description/reading/supporting as appropriate.
  • But
- remember the simplest solution can be the best.
- at times when the child can be independent, it is valid use of your time to be preparing elsewhere.
  • Discussion with teachers concerned.
  • Can the quantity be reduced?
  • Can some work be scribed?
  • Can some worksheets be taped?
  • Individual copies of board work.
  • Individual copies of teaching/learning materials round the wall - kept in a personal folder.
  • “Pre-viewing” if possible
  • big texts
  • video
  • presentations
  • Texts can be copied for use of a single VI child.
(as long as original has been purchased by the school). If in doubt, contact publisher.)
  • Redraft.
  • Re-colour using strong vibrant colours (rememberthis may not help some children).
  • Pick out salient points using Wikki-Sticks.
e.g. laid along a road or river
  • Important to establish directional vocabulary early with young VI children.
  • Left, right, up, down and also North, South, East, West.
  • Present in smaller “units”.
  • Have pieces of matt black card handy to reduce area needing scanned and encourage visual attention.
  • The scale is not lost if a CCTV is available. Both ruler and object are enlarged. Stand magnifiers may also help .
  • Child learns to “estimate”, when using a ruler marked in cm and ½cm only.
  • Answers are worked out related to enlargement.
  • Magnifiers may be the best solution to help understanding, with a redrafted copy to ease reading.
  • Audio files? Screen reader software?
  • Highlighting to aid reference work.
  • Position of seating may need changing.
