CUSTER COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Purpose
The purpose of the Courthouse Gallery is to exhibit works of art by Custer County citizens in a venue in which all Custer County citizens will feel comfortable and welcome. Exhibits chosen for the Courthouse Gallery will represent all levels of art expertise, and will encourage younger and less experienced artist to continue education and experience in their craft so that their art goals may be realized in the future by an exhibition at a name gallery.
Schedule of Exhibits
Art displays will rotate several times a year.
The Courthouse Gallery will be open during regular operating hours of the Custer County Courthouse, and may open for special events as determined the Courthouse Gallery Committee.
Courthouse Gallery Committee
The Committee shall consist of five members who shall originally be appointed for staggered terms of one, two and three years to provide continuity on the Committee. Appointments thereafter shall be made for three year terms. The Committee shall select its own Chairperson.
On March 7th the Custer County Commissioners appointed the following members to the Courthouse Gallery Committee. Kim Horkey for a 3 year term; Paul Horsted for a one year term; Mary Jo Marcy and Tommie Leenknecht for 2 year terms; and Phil Lampert for a one year term. Kim Horkey was chosen as President and Tommie Leenknecht as Secretary.
The members of the Courthouse Gallery Committee shall have education and/or experience in art and art exhibits, and must be a resident of Custer County.
The Custer County Planning Department shall serve as the Committee’s liaison to the County.
The Courthouse Gallery Committee will develop its own operating procedures and submittal forms, releases, etc., necessary for the exhibition of art in the Courthouse Gallery.
Exhibits
Persons requesting their art to be exhibited may submit samples to the Courthouse Gallery Committee for consideration. All work to be exhibited shall be juried by the Courthouse Gallery Committee.
Appreciation of art is in the eye of the beholder, and all forms of art (painting, photography, sculpture, collages, mixed media, etc.) are encouraged to be exhibited in the Courthouse Gallery. However, given that the Courthouse Gallery is a Public place and a certain level of decorum is expected, exhibits that would be considered controversial by the general Public will not be exhibited. Art depicting pornography or sexual acts, crimes, or violent acts will not be exhibited. Art of an overly religious nature or promoting a specific religion or belief will not be exhibited.
Original paintings, sculpture, hand-pulled prints, drawings, photography developed by the artists, fiber and original glass creations, and original crafts are acceptable for submission. All two-dimensional works must be framed and properly equipped for hanging. Sculpture should be able to stand, with or without a base.
Artists who submit pieces for exhibition do so voluntarily, and the County shall not pay any fees for exhibition. The county also does not carry additional insurance to offer the loss of the art by theft, vandalism or other reason, and the artists accept full responsibility for their art during the exhibition. The County has a security presence in the Courthouse and will dally monitor the exhibit.
Art shall be hung at the discretion of the Courthouse Gallery Committee.
All art must be properly equipped for hangingor the art will not be hung.
The Courthouse Gallery Committee may develop themes for shows, and all art must be in accordance with the announced theme. The decision of the Courthouse Galley Committee concerning inclusion in an exhibition is final. There is no appeal process.
Art must be dry and ready for hanging.
Works of art may only be exhibited in the Courthouse Gallery once.
