THE CURSE OF THE LORD

Many people know about curses emanating from man and Satan. However they are unaware of curses that have their origin in God. God does not delight in cursing but when man leaves Him no alternative but to do, He does (Ezekiel 33:11; Isaiah 3:10,11).

Curses from man can be reversed by men with higher authority and anointing than the individual who proclaimed the curse when all conditions for reversal have been met. Curses from Satan can be cancelled by anointed men of God.

However curses from God can only be reversed by God or His representative when God approves so and delegates it (1 Samuel 2:24,25).

The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked (Proverbs 3:33). God’s curse are far more serious than that of man and the devil (Psalm 37:22).

CURSING GOD’S ANOINTED

Genesis 12:3; 27:29; 2 Kings 2:19-22; Psalm 105:13-15; Exodus 22:28; Acts 23:1-5; Numbers 24:9; James 3:9-13; 1 Peter 3:9-13; Deuteronomy 23:4,5.

Abraham was God’s anointed. To curse him or his descendants is to invite a curse on oneself (Genesis 12:3; 27:29; Numbers 22-25).

The children that made mockery of Elisha were cursed and destroyed (2 Kings 2:19-22). God has expressly commanded that we should not touch His anointed either physically or verbally (Psalm 105:13-15). God is against verbal abuse or cursing of His servants (Exodus 22:28; Acts 23:1-5).

Israel was a blessed nation, God’s peculiar treasure (Exodus 19:4-6). Balaam was also cursed because he tried to curse those already blessed by God. God told him not to curse them (Numbers 22:12). However he rejected God’s counsel and went ahead to try to curse the children of Israel. In every attempt of his trying to curse Israel, he ended up heaping curses upon himself. He never died the death of the righteous as he desired. Balaam’s end was never like Israel’s glorious end. He perished with the heathen (Numbers 23:10; 31:8).

Shimei cursed David – God’s anointed. He thereby brought a woeful end upon himself (2 Samuel 16:5-13; 1 Kings 2:8,38-44).

Cursing or oppressing God’s anointed can result into significant curses upon a person’s life (2 Chronicles 24:20-27; 2 Timothy 4:14,15; John 20:22,23).

God does not expect that the believer will be cursing (James 3:9-13; 1 Peter 3:9-13; Psalm 34:12-16). If you don’t know what to do, bless the Lord at all times and let His praise be continually in your mouth (Psalm 34:1).

CORRUPTING GOD’S ASSEMBLY

2 Kings 9:34; Revelation 2:14,15,20-23; 3:9; 1 Corinthians 11:20-22,27-34; 10:20,21; 2 Corinthians 4:1,2; Jude 4,8,10-12,16; 2 Peter 2:13-22.

Jezebel in the Old Testament corrupted God’s people and led them astray into idol worship. She was a cursed woman (2 Kings 9:34). Jezebel of Thyatira in the New Testament corrupted God’s assembly. She was cursed and judges by God (Revelation 2:20-23).

Balaam taught Balak to cast a stumbling block before Israel by polluting Israel through fornication and idolatry. He desired to die the death of the righteous. But he was cursed and died the death of the wicked (Numbers 23:10; 31:8).

Corrupting God’s assembly through immorality or unbecoming behaviour invites God’s fiery judgement (1 Corinthians 11:20-22,27-34; 10:20,21).

Gossiping, sowing discord among brethren, criticizing people unnecessarily and uttering words of unbelief and discouragement are ways of evil affecting the mind of the brethren and corrupting God’s assembly.

CRAFTINESS IN GOD’S ASSIGNMENT

Jeremiah 48:10; 1:7-9,17,18; 1 Kings 22:13,14; 23:29-32; 1 Corinthians 4:1,2; 2 Corinthians 4:1,2; Judges 5:23; Malachi 2:1-9; 1:6-14.

“Cursed be he that doeth the work of the Lord deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood” (Jeremiah 48:10).

When God gives us an assignment or calls us into the ministry, He expects and demands faithfulness (1 Corinthians 4:1,2; 2 Corinthians 4:1,2). Unfaithfulness in such assignments will invite God’s curse.

When God gives us His word to proclaim as preachers, He expects and demands faithfulness (Jeremiah 1:7-9,17,18; 1 Kings 22:13,14). There will always be pressure to compromise but we need to keep on being faithful (Amos 7:12-17; 1 Kings 22:13,14). When we compromise and begin to preach watered-down, adulterated gospel, we are cursed (Malachi 2:1-9; 1:6-14; Jeremiah 23:29-32).

In times of national crisis, when God expects us to arise to the challenge and go forth into battle on His behalf, when we shark this responsibility, we are cursed like the people of Meroz (Judges 5:23).

CONFISCATING GOD’S ALLOTMENT

Leviticus 27:30-34; Proverbs 3:9,10,33; Deuteronomy 26:1-15; Malachi 3:8,9; 1:6-14; Zechariah 5:1-5.

The tithe is not our money. It is the Lord’s and it is holy unto the Lord (Leviticus 27:30-34). God can do with His money the way He likes. He has commanded us to bring the tithe into His storehouse with the added benefit of blessings (Malachi 3:10-12; Proverbs 3:9,10).

However to confiscate the tithe and to use it in another way is regarded by God as putting the holy tithe into an unholy use (Deuteronomy 26:13,14). God regards it as barefaced robbery and this invites God’s curse (Malachi 3:8,9). God’s curse is specifically in the house of the thief (Zechariah 5:1-5).
