(I am the first community college instructor to be chosen for this fellowship)

·  Was chosen as a finalist for the Walter Kase Award in education (2005)

·  Member of Phi Alpha Theta (National History Honor Society) since 2007

·  Featured in an article in the Community College Times, the journal of the American Association of Community Colleges entitled, “Holocaust museum helps bring history to the classroom” by Tabitha Whissemore (March, 2011).

·  Presenter (along with two fellow USHMM’s museum teacher fellows) at the 101st Annual Convention of the National Council of Teachers of English in Chicago, Illinois (November 17- 20, 2011).

The theme: “Reading the Past, Writing the Future.”

The proposal: Three USHMM MTFs bring together public and parochial experience

to guide teachers through hands-on strategies for a literacy-based approach to personal writing using diary, memoir, and video testimony from the Holocaust. With literature of the past, teachers will help students find their voice for the future.

I’ve also participated in numerous seminars, workshop, and travel programs related to Holocaust studies:

·  Attended several seminars for educators with Holocaust Museum Houston since the museum began this program in 2003 (Summer Institute for Educators).

·  Attended various lectures, exhibit openings, and teacher trainings at HMH since 2003.

·  Worked as part of Holocaust Museum Houston’s Youth and the Law program (2004-2005).

·  Helped with curriculum development on “Echoes and Reflections,” the Anti-Defamation League’s curriculum on the Holocaust (2005).

·  Traveled to Poland and the Czech Republic (2005) with the Vladka Mead Holocaust study tour for educators.

·  Currently on the Education committee at Holocaust Museum Houston (2008-present).

·  Attended the Belfer Conference (USHMM) in the summer of 2009.

·  Developed and coordinated the seminar – “American Involvement in the Holocaust”- at Alvin Community College (April 15th and 16th, 2011). This was a two day seminar for students and teachers that featured a variety of topics and presenters, focusing primarily on America’s involvement during the Holocaust.

·  In addition to the 2 day seminar on American involvement in the Holocaust that took place at Alvin Community College in April 2011(my MTF project), I also organize a trip, each semester, to Holocaust Museum Houston. I lead students (from ACC and HCC as well as dual credit students from Dawson High School) on a tour of the museum and also arrange to have a Holocaust survivor speak to them after the tour of the museum. This event happens twice a year (2009 – present).

·  Developed and taught a course at Alvin Community College (starting in the spring of 2013) on World War II, the Holocaust and contemporary genocide. This class is an academic coop course where students will not only attend classes on campus but will be required to have involvement with Holocaust Museum Houston as part of the class. As a result of this course, one of the students in the inaugural class has been a regular participant on our trips to Holocaust Museum Houston. He not only shares his personal experiences with Judaism but also helps to lead students on the tour of the museum’s exhibits.
