C.4DETAILED WORK AND TRAINING EXPERIENCE AT TELKOM KENYA LIMITED

I have worked for Telkom Kenya Limited (Former KP&TC) as an Engineer as outlined in the paragraphs below:-

C.4.1Field Involvement.

C.4.1.1Pupilage Period: January, 1985 – July, 1987.

I was a Pupil Engineer (PE) in the firm under the counsellorship of a registered professional engineer (Eng. R. K. Muigua). This two-year period was dedicated to familiarising with telecommunication establishments of the firm. During this period, I acquired knowledge on the firm's Telecommunications Network and Systems viz:- Telephone Network, Telex Network, Cable Systems, Radio and Multiplex Systems, PCM Systems, Leased Circuit Systems etc.

Specifically, the following areas were visited over the first year of this period:-Parklands C400, Nairobi C400, Nairobi C82, Nairobi LTDM, Nairobi SXS, Nairobi Carrier, S /Hill Radio Station and Longonot Satellite Earth Station, Nairobi EDX and BTM Telex exchanges and the Message Switching Centre, Nairobi MCC, Customer Service, Construction section, Transmission and Radio, Cable Construction, AXE-10 and FX800 exchanges, Ngong and Kabete Radio Transmission/Receiving Stations

The second year of pupilage was covered at the firm's construction depot where I was attached to various projects. I partook in the installation of the Othaya C23, Nanyuki C400, Milimani C400 Exchanges and the Eastern/North Eastern type SAT Digital Microwave Radio System.

For each of the areas visited, separate reports were prepared to highlight the concepts learned and these were presented to the counsellor for guidance. C.4.1.3Executive Engineer/Senior Executive Engineer/Senior Assistant Manager/ Manager in an Engineering office: (September, 1988 – Dec 2008)

In mid-September, 1988, I was transferred to the Project Planning and Engineering/Exchanges (PPE/S office. In this office I undertook numerous planning and engineering duties viz:-Surveying for its installation site;Preparation of estimates for the project;Preparation for the manner of inter-working the system with the existing equipment;Giving technical advise to installation, commissioning and maintenance officers in the field;Commissioning of the system;Analysis of the operational problems;Project Engineering and Management;Writing papers on engineering issues for seminars and workshops. For instance, in year 2000, I wrote a paper for a seminar, on emerging technologies and their impact to the company, Preparation of Tender Documents;Preparation of equipment specifications; e.g. SS7 and Call Center, Participation in evaluation of technical tenders;Project steering and management;General administrative matters.

I retired from Telkom Kenya Limited in December 2008 through Voluntary Early Retirement scheme.
