SAC Meeting Minutes

Wednesday October 11, 2017

Meeting procedures and Agenda creation were reviewed. People are invited to add items to the agenda. Should the board send out any policies that require SAC feedback these policies will be sent to members ahead of time with the expectation they will have been read before the meeting.

SAC Role – the role of the SAC is as an advisory board to the school principal. There are times when the school may require the SAC to form a subcommittee known as the Discipline Committee. Teachers, Staff and Students cannot be on this Committee. The Chair of the SAC would chair the Discipline. This would be called for Suspensions that are appealed.

Letter of Agreement between the school, SAC and the board was signed in October 2015.

On October 19th the HRSB will be holding anin-service/training session for new SAC members. Cathryn Kelly and Sharmen Allen with attend with Principal Paula Fairbairn.

Linda MacKay, board member, has invited SAC members to a JL Isley consultation meeting to discuss possible school configuration. Verity will decline on behalf of Cunard until there is a more purposeful session happening with a clear directive.

  • We have a number of specialist services with ties to the school (guidance counsellor, psychologist, speech language therapist, social worker, assistive technology, autism specialist, APSEA, behavior specialist, program planning specialist, English as an additional language teacher, YMCA, Junior High intervention teacher, SchoolsPlus, Pathways to Education and IWK mental health clinician) We also have 3 100% and 1 80% EPAs who provide support to our students with special needs.

Student Success Plan:

  • School Improvement Plan – Year 1 (development of goals and strategies)
  • Math: To improve students’ ability to problem solve and justify their reasoning.
  • Literacy: To improve student achievement in reading comprehension with a focus on information text/non-fiction text.
