During their Physical Education class students in 7th grade will learn a number of skills, and sports aligned with the California State Standards for Physical Education.

As we begin the school year, I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I have earned my Bachelors of Science degree in Kinesiology from Long Beach State University. This will be my fifteenth year as a proud teacher of Culver City Middle School, I have also worked as the athletic director for our after school program. I am eager to start this school year with several exciting activities and lessons. The 7th grade curriculum will include: Team Sports, Fitness, Skill Development, Teamwork, Cooperative Games, Rhythmic Activities and more.

My personal goal is for each student to enjoy physical activity, giving forth their best effort, and acquiring a lifelong love of physical and recreational activity while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

I look forward to meeting each of you, and to a great and exciting school year!

Curriculum

Students will learn activities, skills and sports aligned with the State of California Physical Education Standards. The Physical Education curriculum emphasizes high activity time and provides activities for students of all skill levels

1.  Students demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities

2.  Students demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles and strategies that apply to learning and performance of physical activities.

3.  Students assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance.

4.  Students demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles and strategies to improve health and performance.

Students demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles and strategies to perform a variety of physical activity.

Essential standards:

3.6 Assess periodically the attainment of; progress toward personal fitness goals and make necessary adjustments to a personal fitness program.

3.5 Participate in moderate to vigorous activity a minimum of three days a week.

4.5 Describe the role of physical activity and nutrition in achieving physical fitness

2.4 Explain and demonstrate spin and rebound principles for performing manipulative skills.

Class activities also allow students to develop physical skills, and include assessments when needed.

Classroom Expectations

1. Students will be on-time, sitting on their assigned roll call number, and prepared daily with necessary materials.

2. Students will respect themselves, peers, facilities, equipment, and the teacher at all times.

3. Students must use all equipment safely and as instructed.

4. Students will abide by the Physical Education Department Handbook and rules.

Instructional Units:

Basketball, Soccer, Paddle Tennis/Badminton, Football, Cooperative games, Indoor Games, Team handball, Indoor soccer, C oonditioning)

Assessments will include:

Throwing, catching, rebounding, dribbling, defensive strategies, offensive strategies, and teamwork.

Students will be a given formative assessments throughout each unit. Formative assessments will NOT count toward the final grade according to the following scale:

Grading:

70% Participation/Effort

20% Fitness

10% Homework/class work assignments

Dress Policy

Students are expected to wear the required shirt, shorts, and athletic shoes every day. As the winter approaches it will begin to get cooler. Students are permitted to wear sweat pants and long sleeve shirts as long as they are our school colors these can be purchased at the student store. If students are not dressed out in their PE uniform, which includes proper shoes, they will receive a non-dress. 2 or more non-dresses per quarter will result in a N or “needs improvement” and 3 or more will result in a U or “unsatisfactory” in work habits for that grading period.

Fitness Testing:

Seventh grade Physical Education students must take a mandated state of California fitness test. Each student must fall into his/her individual healthy fitness zone. The test consists of Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Cardiovascular Fitness, Flexibility, and Body Composition. Students are required to meet this requirement prior to their High School graduation. It is our shared goal that each student achieve their healthy fitness level prior to graduation. However, these test scores do not directly affect their grade in their physical education class.
