American Philharmonic presents a concert of "Turkish Delights," April 26 and 27, Santa Rosa
TheAmerican Philharmonic Sonoma Countywill present the final concerts of its 15th anniversary season with performances on April 26 and 27 of Turkish Delights.
The concerts feature violinist Yova Milanova performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 (“Turkish”), written when the composer was only 19 and a violin virtuoso himself. Ms. Milanova comes from a family of distinguished Bulgarian musicians and has performed with leading orchestras throughout the world. This will be her West Coast premiere.
The program also includes Rossini’s overture to The Italian Girl in Algiers. The overture shines with the wit and sparkle you’d expect of music that opens a classic, comedy of errors opera. The program concludes with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 (“Italian”). Written when the composer was just 24, the themes are inspired by his travels in Italy, and result in his most popular symphony.
The American Philharmonic Sonoma County, conducted by Norman Gamboa, is a 65-member orchestra made up of professional-level musicians who volunteer their talents to reach an audience of people who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience a live orchestra. Bringing people who love to play classical music together with those who love to listen to it, the orchestra has presented over 100 affordable concerts in Sonoma County over the past 15 years.
The upcoming concerts will be held on April 26 at 8:00 pm and April 27 at 2:00 pm at the Santa Rosa High School Performing Arts Auditorium, 1235 Mendocino Ave.Premium tickets are $15.00, general admission is $10.00 at the door, and students 18 and under are free. For more information or to purchase tickets, visitwww.apsonoma.orgor call 800-838-3006.

Grit- a multimedia dance event with Karen Peterson Dancers, May 15 to 16, Miami
Grit, performed byKaren Peterson and Dancers, is a multimedia dance work choreographed by Karen Peterson and Katrina Weaver and created in collaboration with video artist Dinorah de Jesus Rodriquez. The performances will take place on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 8 PM and Friday, May 16, 2015 at 8 PM at the Miami Dade County Auditorium, 2901 West Flagler Street, Miami, Florida.
Through the use of movement, sound and video projection the physical, social and emotional connotations ofGritare explored as the relationship between the visual, the physical and the visceral are amplified on the stage. Struggle, desperation, fear and the fight for power or dominance are common undertones and themes that are played out daily on a personal and global scale. This constant battle for power, control, preservation and survival is a theme played out on stage between the dancers and the relationship of the dancers to the projected images. It is this constant balancing act and fight for preservation that unites us, defines us and keeps us moving forward and is a part of our emotional, spiritual and biological make up. It is a fight for preservation and control that can come at the expense of ourselves, others and nature or can act as a unifying force.
General admission is $20, $15 dollars for seniors, students and individuals with disability. Tickets available at the door. Friday includes a post performance reception.
