Welcome! We are very happy you are interested in the intense, effective, serious and enjoyable experience of the Cooperative University Dairy Students (CUDS). CUDS was started in 1978 by Drs. Melvin Ehlers and Joe Hillers to allow students to get more direct experience in the management and operation of a dairy enterprise. In the 37 years since then, more than 300 graduates of CUDS have applied their skills in a number of endeavors, including all aspects of the dairy industry. It is neither a requirement nor an expectation that you have experience with dairy animals or businesses prior to acceptance to CUDS. Neither is it a requirement or expectation that one enter the dairy industry upon graduation. Some do, some don’t. The personal and professional experience you will gain can be applied in all walks of life. CUDS is a real enterprise, with daily responsibilities and consequences. CUDS helps to supply high-quality milk, along with the Knott Dairy Center, to the WSU Creamery to produce world-famous Cougar cheeses and ice cream. CUDS students interact daily with, and are responsible to, the management of the KDC, and with veterinarians from the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Advisor and the Chair of the Department of Animal Sciences. The CUDS program is under the constant scrutiny and expectations of an Advisory Board made out of leaders in the Dairy Industry including managers, veterinarians, bankers and specialists in all fields. There are high expectations for performance, and high rewards for those that want to seek them out. We are excited you are interested, and we always strive to help you get the most out of this experiential learning program.

Explain how you became interested in the CUDS program and what skills and experiences you hope to contribute to the program.
