An invitation is extended to all interested New Zealand Secondary Schools to attend the annual NZ Secondary School Cross Country Skiing Championship at the Snow Farm, Cardona Valley, Wanaka, on Saturday 17thSeptember, 2016.

This is an individual and team based event hosted by the Pisa Alpine Charatible Trust , Snow Farm and the Waiorau Nordic Sport Club.

Visit for the weekend or just a day to see this stimulating environment and to learn what else is on offer for education outside the classroom.

The team at the Snow Farm will happilydiscuss the winter skiing programmes they offer to schools that incorporate appropriate Unit and Achievement Standards into senior PE and OE curriculums.

Race Categories

There will be three races:

1. 3km individual Classic(maximum 30 minutes)

2.1kmIndividual Freestyle Sprint (Classic or Skate)(maximum 5 minutes per race)

3. 3 x 3km Team Relay Freestyle (Classic and Skate)(maximum 60 minutes for 3 participants)

Race Rules and Points

Relay Teams must have 3 different participants to be eligible for any Relay Awards or School Points.

Relay Teams must include at least one classic skier for the first leg and have a minimum of 3 participants from one single school for points towards Overall Champion School.

Mixed school relay teams, including adults, are most welcome to take part in the relay and are eligible for Best Any Team but not for points for Overall Champion School.

Participants must take part in both Individual races to be eligible for any Individual Award.

Individual place getters are calculated from combined times from both Individual races.

Freestyle Sprint race is a single timed race for each participant (no qualifying, semi-finals or finals).

School Points still count if participants choose to do only one Individual race, for any reason.

Participation place getters are calculated by total numbers of current students from each school squad in all 3 race categories.

Overall Champion School is calculated from accumulated points from the top 3 place getters from each Squad from the: Individual 3km classic, Individual 1km Sprint Freestyle plus thefastest Relay Race team.

The points system is set up to encourage all School Squad members to take part and try their best in all races, this helps their Squad accumulate maximum points and also helps restrict other Squads accumulating points. Points are calculated by reversing the placing from each race category, and weighted by 3 for the relay.

More details of race rules and courses will be available at registration and the race briefings.

Award categories

1. Best Individual Male and Female Award from both Individual Racescombined.

2. Best Competitive School Team Award forbest 3 from one School from Relay Race.

3. Best Any Team Award for any 3, including adults or mixed Schools, from Relay Race.

4.School Participation Award for most participants in all races.

5. Overall Champion School Squad Award for most points from all 3 races.

Skiing Ability and Safety

The race courses will be set for successful completion by all entrantswho will range in ability from novice to very experienced cross-country skiers.

Whilst the course setters will do all they can to ensure that the courses are set as safely as possible and the races run under safe conditions, ultimate responsibility of individual participants safety lies with the School Squad team managers and supervising adults.
