Career Medical Education Research Awards Department of Medicine

University of Ottawa

This paper describes the intent of the career awards, the eligibility criteria for these awards, the application process, the duration of the awards and the criteria established for sustaining these awards.

1.  The Purpose of Developing Career Medical Education Research Awards

The Career Medical Education Research Awards are available to provide salary support for members of the Department of Medicine whose career development is centered in Medical Education. The Education Career awards are intended to encourage and support members of the Department of Medicine to pursue their academic and scholarly interests in medical education. The purpose of the award is to:

Encourage the conceptualization, design, implementation, and evaluation of a wide variety of innovations in Medical Education including new curricula or courses; assessment instruments; web-based learning material; and teaching strategies to name a few. A clear expectation is that the members’ work be disseminated in order to be considered scholarship.

The Education Grants committee has adopted the expanding view of scholarship within medical education (1) in developing these awards. We view scholarship to include activities within any of the following four components:

1.  Scholarship of Discovery: includes the development of original educational research

2.  Scholarship of Integration: includes the search for connections between educational discoveries by different approaches or disciplines resulting in novel insights.

3.  Scholarship of Application: including the building of bridges between educational theory and practice. This would involve how knowledge can be used in practical situations and the how innovative approaches impact on systems of education.

4.  Scholarship of Teaching: including how faculty can effectively communicate knowledge to students, residents and their peers.

The following criteria, as outline by Glassick, will be used as criteria for judging scholarship in education: clear goals; adequate preparation; appropriate methods; significant results; effective presentation and reflective critique. (2)

Career Educator Awards will be available for 3 year terms at the Tier 1 level $60,000 or Tier 2 level $40,000 annually. The following are examples of Tier 1 and Tier 2 productivity.

On an annual basis, Tier 1 awardees will have 1-4 publications accepted/submitted or in print, several abstracts presented at national and international meetings, 1-3 grant submissions, and have several ongoing projects (7-12). An expectation of Tier 1 awardees is that they provide support and mentorship for junior colleagues in the Department of Medicine. Tier 2 awardees will have approximately half the productivity by the end of their 3 year cycle. Please note these are general guidelines only. Annual progress reports and submissions are reviewed by a committee that will review the members proposed projects and progress over time.
